Lyrics & Links
[edit]I would like to see the lyrics posted in full with the links directing you to the explaination of the words and footnotes for things that seem to need specific mention in regards to rent. (for example, what is meant by the reference to Calcutta is not well answered by simply reading a really long entry on what Calcutta is in a literally sence. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 65.43.33.175 (talk • contribs) .
- We can't post the lyrics in full, unfortunately, because of copyright. There is a link to the full lyrics at the bottom of the page. I somewhat concur with your statement that we should explain what some of these things mean in the context of the musical... except most of them really are just throwaway references. For instance, your edit to explain "Calcutta" better wasn't something that I had thought of or that makes particular sense to me in context -- Benny says, "This is Calcutta. Bohemia is dead," which makes me think that "Calcutta" is more a reference to modernity and something positive. But by all means be bold, if you see something that you think is missing! :) Hbackman 05:24, 6 March 2006 (UTC)
- Calcutta is referring to their neighborhood ("where people piss on your stoop every night"). —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 129.44.216.105 (talk • contribs) .
- Ohhhhh. Actually, yeah, that does make some sense. So the idea behind it is more "You're living in a shitty place. Stop thinking you're in some Bohemian utopia?" Hbackman 22:57, 12 March 2006 (UTC)
- I wish we could print the lyrics in full. The page looks messy and unformatted otherwise. Luckily, Larson's dead, so only 59 years and 8 months until then. VolatileChemical 23:41, 14 April 2006 (UTC)
- the lyrics link is dead, I cant find a link to the actual lyrics, only ones from the movie, so gonna link it to the song from the movie, please change it if you find it... —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 68.226.0.76 (talk • contribs) 2 May 2006 (UTC)
since someone added the lyrics anyway, should we add the second part of the song that continues after Roger and Mimi's song (I Should Tell You)? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 69.224.32.37 (talk • contribs) 13 May 2006 (UTC)
- Putting the lyrics in the article is a copyright violation. I am reverting to the last version that did not contain the lyrics. Hbackman 03:38, 14 May 2006 (UTC)
- The lyrics have to be allowed, type in lyrics on google and you'll find tons of sites that have lyrics on them and are not shut down. You just need to state all its information. Also, pages like Science Fiction/Double Feature have the lyrics on them. -- Cbrown1023 16:08, 2 September 2006 (UTC)
- It didn't turn out that well, so you can revert it if you want, but I'd rather you edit it so it looks better. -- Cbrown1023 17:21, 2 September 2006 (UTC)
- I'm very sorry, but including copyrighted lyrics in Wikipedia is not allowed: See Wikipedia:Lyrics and poetry. I have also removed the copyright violation at Science Fiction/Double Feature.-- Rmrfstar 19:22, 2 September 2006 (UTC)
yeah, i thought Calcutta was referring to that city's working hard instead of Bohemia's art-fun thing, as opposed to the living conditions there.
Instead of posting the full lyrics, you can just list the reference points and what they symbolize. Also, if you cite where the lyrics are from and give credit where it's due, I would think it legal. (BlackAvalanche)
Leather
[edit]I changed the leather link to a link to "Leather subculture" as it is quite likely what they are singing about. Most people know what the material leather is, not as many are aware of leather subculture. It's a more suitable link, IMO.
List of references
[edit]I think this list of "cultural references" adds very little to the article. The significances of few of these references are explained, and if anyone wanted a complete list of such references, they'd go read the lyrics directly; this is just a partial transcription of those lyrics, but wiki-linked. I'd like to remove it completely and instead maybe discuss some of the important references. -- Rmrfstar 00:58, 12 July 2006 (UTC)
- It adds to the article. Here is a quote directly from the article:
“ | In celebrating Bohemia, the song recites the names of artists who served as inspiration and as a symbol of Bohemia themselves, as well as places and things integral to the lives of these artists. Some of the references are obscure, while others are self-explanatory. | ” |
- The whole song is about references, it's a list so that you can understand them all.
- "Some of the references are obscure," if you hear the song and want to know what it means, you can find it from here.
- It adds to the whole article, Benny is stated as having said "Bohemia is dead," meaning that nothing comes out of it anymore, no music, no arts, that is is only a place for the homeless, but this is a response to that showing that there's a ton of things that still come out of Bohemia.
- If anyone else thinks it should be removed, then maybe, but so far you are the only one who has spoken up.

Lists of references have been deprecated for some time now. They are similar to "popular culture" sections: trivial, not needed. It could be argued that listing all the references are WP:NOT#LYRICS, which may be copyvio. In any case, the significance of each item is trivial and no song article goes into this much list-like detail about every lyric. You want to know what is what? Any lyrics website will bring up the lyrics and you can punch it in from there. hbdragon88 (talk) 17:47, 6 July 2009 (UTC)
Merger proposal
[edit]I've proposed that the article La Vie Boheme B be merged into this article. While I do see the possible benefits of having an article on this song, I certainly don't believe that it deserves two articles. In my opinion, La Vie Boheme B could be considered a reprise of La Vie Boheme, and there's really no reason why any pertinent information from "B" couldn't be covered in the article about the main song. —Mears man 16:37, 30 November 2007 (UTC)
- Since there has been no opposition to the proposal, I merged the articles. There may still be some cleanup needed, though. →ClarkCTTalk @ 04:30, 5 March 2008 (UTC)

La Vie Boheme → La Vie Bohème — The correct title includes the accent. Move over redirect; should be uncontroversial. — This, that, and the other (talk) 10:28, 29 August 2010 (UTC)
- uncontroversial Since redirect exists and that is a good reason why would it be otherwise? 207.81.170.99 (talk) 18:07, 29 August 2010 (UTC)
- Uncontroversial. I am placing
{{db-move}}
on the page La Vie Bohème so someone can delete that redirect and then move this page there. --- cymru lass (hit me up)⁄(background check) 22:15, 29 August 2010 (UTC)
