Here are some confusing newspaper reports about the Schwaben's wreck.

  • GERMAN AIRSHIP WRECK. Poverty Bay Herald, Volume XXXIX, Issue 12859, 24 August 1912, Page 2 "accident occurred outside the Schwaben's shed ... and thirty four soldiers were more or less severely injured. ...Several companies of soldiers held her down ... at 1.30 a squall ... tore the vessel from her moorings. ... "
  • LIFE INSURANCE AND AVIATION, full article: New York Times - Nov 24, 1912. "insured ... rate of 2.5 per cent., and by the terms of the policy ... destruction by explosion excluded" also includes early aviation insurance and accident statistics
  • WILL NOT RETARD AVIATION.; American Experts Attribute Accident to Stress of Competition. full article. New York Times October 18, 1913, page 8. "October 17, ... Yesterday's destruction of the Zeppelin L-II ... 1911, thirty-four soldiers were injured by an explosion of gas that wrecked the dirigible Schwaben ... L-I was destroyed ... Sept. 9 ... killed" - note 1911 not 1912!

Operating History

[edit]

There is the appearance of conflicting information with regards to the number of passengers served by this airship. The discrepancy between the 6,045 and 10,197 figures seems more than a case of a slight accounting misstep to this passing observer. Monoblocks (talk) 18:46, 12 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I have added an extra source to support the 6,045 figure; and a clarification tag to the claim from Douglas Botting (I have only snippet access to that book). It is certainly confusing but the Botting quote refers to passengers carried by the "airline" (DELAG) and not just the Schwaben. DELAG operated several airships: LZ 6, LZ 7, LZ 8, LZ 10 Schwaben, LZ 11 Viktoria Luise, LZ 13 Hansa and LZ 17 Sachsen. However I then find the 10,197 figure far too low, hence my request for clarification. -84user (talk) 21:48, 12 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
