Now whats really funny is that we added code to defeat this attack to BSD in the end of the 80s already. *shrug*.

12/23/2005 Funny that everyone seems to think that the land attack was first discovered in 1997, when in fact it was first discovered over a year earlier in october 1996, when i was annoyed with microsoft support and wrote the lame code and lame name called hack.c that sent packets to a machine on the local network to port 139 with the source ip being the same as the destination ip and the same source port 139 with an attached message saying f u a-hole (the polite version); which I then tested by crashing everyones windows computer simultaneously in the office. Of course I made sure they knew about it first so they could save their work, since they were not the ones that annoyed me to the point of writing the code. There are at least 10 people that knew about this code in 1996, since I explained to them how it worked after I crashed their computer. I still have that original lame code. Stop messing up this page

Whoever keeps on claiming to be the original discoverer of this attack, stop posting it in the article. You do not seem to know what an encyclopedia is. You do not say "myself". You're supposed to talk about the actual subject in a neutral way. Here is what was put in the article.

UPDATE: (December 2005) Contrary to popular belief, the land attack was actually first discovered in october of 1996 and was named hack.c. It was not m3lt that initially discovered the problem, but his work was spread around the internet and became known as the initial discoverer of the problem over a year after the initial discovery. After it was used as a demonstration to crash an entire local area network of computers at a company based in NYC, Microsoft was made aware of the problem by the original author, myself which is writing this update, of the spoofing attack in december of 1996, but they denied that there was a problem, until it became a widespread problem on the internet.

OK, now after finding this talk page, sorry for not doing it properly and for not being "neutral". At least all original article information was not modified.

As far as "verifiable" evidence that this flaw was discovered in October 1996, there is a copy of the email sent to microsoft, but anyone will just say that can be faked, unless microsoft has a copy of the email. An email reply from microsoft was never received. There was never a recording of the phone conversation, but ears that overheard the loud screaming. The bbs site where the information was originally posted no longer exists. The approximately ten people that were involved could potentially provide statements authenticating these claims, that would maybe at least then get the main article page modified stating this was a known problem in 1996. Anyway, at least anyone that finds this discussion page will know of the possibility that this flaw was known to microsoft in December 1996.

You're welcome to go ahead and add this to the article, just don't post it like a talk page, and use neutral grammar and terms. Don't use "I" or other things like that. Maybe you can edit the recent disclosure page and say "Recentsources say the attack might have been discovered earlier", etc. Just don't say "oh I actually find it myself, and I'm writing this article now". That's not encycopedic (sp.?)

I really think this article could use some explanation. "The reason a LAND attack works is because it causes the machine to reply to itself continuously." Doesn't quite work for me.
