Flattering article

[edit]

This is certainly a flattering article about Congressman Rivers, omitting the many drunken escapades for which he was notorious, while he was chairman of the Armed Services Committee. Perhaps other editors will disagree, leaving these incidents behind. --DThomsen8 (talk) 01:30, 17 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

January 2013

[edit]

It's amazing such a racist scumbag can get such adulation. He may have been the enlisted mans best friend, but I doubt he was the black enlisted mans best friend. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.108.136.22 (talk) 03:58, 25 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Did Mendel Rivers die of alcoholism, or an alcohol-related disease? The article doesn't state anything about how he died. Thanks in advance to anybody who k nows. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 88.105.80.8 (talk) 13:54, 29 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

No longer such a "fanboy" article

[edit]

This article now mentions how Rivers was noted during his lifetime by reputable journalists to have been an active alcoholic, and mentions his long-standing opposition to civil rights for African Americans, his friendship with George Wallace, and the like. It no longer refers to him as "the enlisted man's best friend." Is it now balanced enough to remove the "bias" tag, at least? 2600:1004:B15F:DA7D:3CB2:552C:B02C:60B6 (talk) 14:12, 16 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
