The translation of the name is somewhat misleading, or at least likely to cause confusion. One could easily get the impression that the Northern Sami name for the island means "Whale Island", which is not the case. The Norwegian name Kvaløya does mean "Whale Island", but the Sami name is derived from an older Norse name, Salarey, meaning "Seal Island". Maitreya (talk) 10:23, 7 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
