Ref 30 didn't say Gabriel was assigned to the AHL team.

In addition, the Devils placed forwards Blake Pietila, Kurtis Gabriel and Eric Tangradi, plus defensemen John Ramage and Brian Strait, on waivers. Waivers means they are being sent to the AHL but have the ability to be taken by any team.
