History
[edit]The history of Kulim (Malaysia) Berhad (“Kulim” or “the Group”) began over 70 years ago with the incorporation of Kulim Rubber Plantations Ltd (“KRPL”) in the United Kingdom on 4 July 1933. KRPL began operations in 1947 with a 190-hectare rubber plantations in the state of Johor, Malaysia. Since then, Kulim has grown consistently and successfully weathered the ups and downs of economic cycles and several changes of corporate leadership. Towards the end of the sixties, Kulim had a total of 7,790 hectares of oil palm and rubber. It also had interests in construction and property development in the United Kingdom, hotels in the Trinidad and Tobago islands in the Caribbean and a rubber plantation in Nigeria. Kulim’s shareholders’ equity stood at GBP7.8 million at the end of the decade.
On 16 July 1970, reflecting the transition to multi-cropping, in particular expansive oil palm cultivation, KRPL changed its name to the Kulim Group Limited (“KGL”) and listed its shares on the London Stock Exchange. A significant turning point for Kulim took place in 1975 when the company moved its listing and ownership to Malaysia. Kulim (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd was incorporated on 3 July 1975 and later on 18 August 1975 was made public and assumed its present name Kulim (Malaysia) Berhad. The Malaysian company was listed on the main board of the Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange (now Bursa Malaysia) on 14 November 1975 and subsequently in 1977, withdrew from its listing on the London Stock Exchange. KGL became a subsidiary of Kulim, in accordance with a Scheme of Arrangement carried out under Section 206 of the United Kingdom Companies Act 1948, by transferring to Kulim the assets and liabilities of KGL. At the same time assets in the United Kingdom were divested.
