I do not think the tourist section should be written like a sales brochure, as this one is.
David (March 14 2005)
I do not think the tourist attractions that are not located in KL should be written as such. It would be better to shift these to Malaysia - Tourism.
jasontn (Mar 20, 2004)
The following excerpt by a native KL-ite (apparently) reads more like a disillusioned traveller's rant, and has been moved here from the main article (Sewing 16:40, 24 Dec 2003 (UTC)):
- ...the public transport system is woefully inadequate (try riding on a KL bus and feel the pain, plus they have no sense of the term, TIMETABLE), taxis are some of the rudest in the world ("Cannot lah, traffic jam.") and the water infrastructure, once the best in South East Asia, is old, leaky and in a sorry state generally, with water which used to be drinkable from the tap now brown and sludgy, the cause of many an irate citizen having to install expensive water filters.
- Well, while obviously the wrong tone to take, it is somewhat accurate :). I'm not sure how you could edit out the hostile tone, though. Perhaps by describing the public transport system as 'underdeveloped' or 'immature', perhaps? --T-Boy 15:30, 8 Jun 2004 (UTC)
The guy who made those comments is most likely from Singapore !!
Well, I noticed Sunway Piramid is listed as one of the malls - which is rather inaccurate. It is under Subang Jaya District, which is separate from the Federal Territory and within Selangor. In fact, it is rather hell to get to Sunway Piramid from the centre of Kuala Lumpur - you would have to take a Komuter train to Subang Jaya stop, and with enough prayers, hope on a bus to Sunway which in all realism, is normally a 1/2 an hour ride (plus another half an hour train ride from Brickfields, not forgeting the long bus wait).
Other than the theme park, which IMHO is the bigger attraction, I don't see what's there for Sunway Piramid to offer that one couldn't find in places like Megamall, or Suria, or one of the dozens of other malls in KL. Oh... the pyramid theme...
Oh well. You could have mentioned about the malls along Jalan Bukit Bintang - Imbi Plaza, Sg. Wang Plaza, Lot 10, Star Hill, and oh, further up the street, Berjaya Times Square (note the Berjaya)
KL vs Putrajaya
AFAIK Kuala Lumpur remains the official capital of Malaysia, even though some administrative functions have been shifted to Putrajaya. See [1]. Jpatokal 04:09, 22 Mar 2004 (UTC)
Economic, cultural, human resource, demographic, etc
The city is incomplete without mentioning any of the above.
Sltan 06:25, 20 September 2005 (UTC)
Agreed with Sltan. I'm trying to learn about Kuala Lumpur from educational point of view and having looked at the page it describes, it sounds like selling tourism. Please include the details of demograhic, economic and culture. They are the integral parts of an encyclopedia/Wikipedia. The geography section is so simple that I couldn't learn anything from it at all. Even the history has no chronological events, not to mention its accuracy.

Hotel
Do we need to list down the hotel and rate it? If we do that, as what the page currently does, we risk to sound like a travel page. Other cities' page, like NY may provide a good template for this page. __earth 18:10, Oct 10, 2004 (UTC)
- No, we don't, that's what Wikitravel is for. I have brutally deleted all non-encyclopedic listings. Jpatokal 03:06, 11 Oct 2004 (UTC)
Jawi
Do we really need KL's name in Jawi? Bandar Seri Begawan I could understand, but Jawi is not an official script anywhere in Malaysia, certainly not in the Wilayat Persekutuan KL. Jpatokal 16:34, 5 Feb 2005 (UTC)
- And again. Mr Tan's latest edit also breaks "Lumpur" at least on my browser. Discussion, please, or I'll remove it. Jpatokal 09:20, 3 Mar 2005 (UTC)
Tourist hype removed
I have removed the entire following section:
- Kuala Lumpur is one of the cheapest places to travel to, offering great value for money. Accommodation is extremely cheap and is of excellent quality; 5 star hotels have rooms going for US$40-100. Food is extremely cheap if one frequents the local outlets (hawker stalls, roadside places and the like) and is nothing short of delicious. There are upmarket restaurants all over central Kuala Lumpur and in the more affluent suburbs, offering fare ranging from cutting edge avant-garde fusion, to representatives of just about any culture imaginable. Japanese food has gained immense popularity. Alcohol, however, is very expensive in Kuala Lumpur, due to Malaysia being a predominantly Muslim country (Islam prohibits the consumption of alcohol, but non-Muslims are free to consume alcohol) and the bars are not a big part of the social scene, although they are extremely popular with the affluent and expatriates.
- Kuala Lumpur has a vibrant nightlife, concentrated in three places; the first being the City Centre (specifically, the Golden Triangle area), the second being the posh district of Bangsar (near the Mid Valley Megamall) and the third being the up and coming swanky district of Seri Hartamas/Mont Kiara. In the Golden Triangle area, there is a myriad of chain restaurants, stores and shopping boutiques as well as a slew of nightclubs and bars. Nuovo and Sangria are interesting clubs to check out.
- Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman and Jalan Bukit Bintang are both shopping streets with many shops and malls. Recently, Jalan Bukit Bintang has undergone massive redevelopment, making it more pedestrian friendly aesthetically pleasing.
- Interestingly, there is an enclave in the city centre where there exists a traditional Malay village (Kampung Baru, a stop on the Putra line LRT), where traditional Malay culture is very much alive.
- Posh residential districts include Taman Tun Dr. Ismail, Seri Hartamas/Mont Kiara, Bangsar, Tropicana, Ampang and Kenny Hill.
This is not NPOV and it's not encyclopedic. The writer is invited to contribute to Wikitravel instead (although even there the hyperbole should be toned down a little...). Jpatokal 16:00, 14 Mar 2005 (UTC)
Contrary with what had been written, the Merdeka Square is not where the Independence was declared. Instead, it was at Merdeka Stadium.
Dataran Merdeka & Stadium Merdeka
I have to agree with the previous poster, it seems the association of Dataran Merdeka/Independence Square with the actual declaration of independence, as writen in the tourist destinations section, is inaccurate (but the site is more significant for the lowering of the Union Jack flag on the start of 31st August, 1957). What's more confusing is the mention of it taking place in Stadium Merdeka in another area of the article.
If that is the case, it's easy to see how the error arises. I certainly understood this sign to mean that this was where the declaration of independence took place, although I now recall that there is a photo in the National History Museum (not far from this sign) of the Tunku declaring independence at a rally in a stadium. ATTENTION: What about KL's economic function?
This article does a very poor job of describing the city's economic standing, which is what all the international fuss is about, in the region and the world. The area about economics, notably present-day KL, is mainly about internal transportation. Is it a financial center, a manufacturing center or what? What are its foreign currency reserves like? It is like a Taipei or Seoul? What? Please explain. -Amit

Mean Kuala Lumpur Time? (Maybe for the enthusiasts)
Right, this may be off topic (It's in the info bar about Kuala Lumpur (KL); look at the UTC. It's related to that) but through calculation and some guidance from a book, I found out that the Mean Kuala Lumpur Time is UTC +06:46:48. This link, http://www.math.nus.edu.sg/aslaksen/teaching/timezone.html shows that UTC +07:00 applies at 105 degrees while KL (as stated) is at 101 degrees 42 minutes. Multiply the difference by 4 to get the correction in minutes.
Degrees Minutes 105 00 - 101 42 ---------------- 3 18 ================ Convert 18/60 to decimal: 18 / 6 = 3 -- = -- 60 / 6 = 10 This will make a difference of 3.3 Degrees. Multiply them by 4: 1 3.3 degrees x 4 ---- 13.2 minutes ==== Which then equals to 13:12 Minutes. H : M : S 07 : 00 : 00 -00 : 13 : 12 -------------- 06 : 46 : 48 ==============
So there you have it. Again, sorry for being so off topic here. The admistrators may have to shift this thing to either UTC, solar time, or whatever article if this becomes a nuisance here. I've even added the mean KL time to the article.--218.208.235.249 02:07, 25 November 2005 (UTC)

The article should have a section on its demographics. There are many things missing such as sports. I think there should be a Wikiproject for KL where more articles should be written about KL and articles about KL should be more structured. Anyone would like to create a project?

Infobox
I've redone the infobox using Template:Infobox City. The previous one looks messy. __earth (Talk) 15:08, 1 June 2006 (UTC)
1. The infobox shows the Federal Territory flag, but the caption beneath it says nothing more than just 'flag'. Confusion may occur -- some may wonder if it is the flag of Kuala Lumpur, the city.
2. The motto in the infobox has an English translation, but the English translation is introduced with the word 'Malay'.
3. 'KL' is not strictly a "nickname"; it is an abbreviation.
4. Elevation --> 'from sea level'.
Splashprince 14:21, 5 June 2006 (UTC)
- First, it is Kuala Lumpur flag. the Federal Territory has a different flag. See Federal Territory. Two, see Chicago and a few other cities infobox. You might have misinterpreted the meaning. Third, okay. Fourth, if you feel it's incorrect, feel free to edit them. __earth (Talk) 16:04, 5 June 2006 (UTC)

This article is quite messy at the moment. topics such as sports should include discussion on sporting facilities which are covered in another section. Failed "good article" nomination
Upon its review on November 3, 2007, this good article nomination was quick-failed because it:
contains cleanup banners including, but not limited to, {{cleanup}}, {{wikify}}, {{NPOV}}, {{unreferenced}}, etc, or large numbers of {{fact}}, {{clarifyme}}, {{huh}}, or similar tags
thus making it ineligible for good article consideration.
This article did not receive a thorough review, and may not meet other parts of the good article criteria. pronunciation
What language was the pronunciation supposed to be for? It wasn't Malay or English. I just want to make sure I haven't missed anything. kwami 06:42, 8 November 2007 (UTC)
- Firstly im quite new to IPA, so forgive me. I put "kwɑlɑ lʊmpʊ" as i think this is the proper Malay (bahasa baku) pronunciation, and i put "kwɑlə lʊmpɒ" as i think this is how KL ppl pronounce it. This might be a bit inaccurate and/pr pov'd. As far as i know only non-malaysians (eg British ppl) pronounce it "kwɑːləlʊmˈpʊər", in particular the last syllable. I never heard Malaysian pronounce it that way. Sorry i cant provide source, only through personal experience. But if this en.wikipedia require us to insert the normal pronounciation made by native English speakers (Briton, American, etc.), i guess "kwɑːləlʊmˈpʊər" is fine. kawaputratorque 05:44, 9 November 2007 (UTC)
- A Malay pronunciation is fine, but it needs to be specified as Malay. We don't need English, but without disambiguation it's assumed that any pronunciation is English. It's been ages since I've been to Malaysia, and I never did go to KL, so I'm pretty useless here. Let's put your 1st version back in, and if it's inaccurate, someone else can correct it. But the [ɒ] is your 2nd version is a very unusual sound, and not many languages other than some dialects of English have it, so I kinda doubt that part's correct. kwami 08:24, 9 November 2007 (UTC)
- Oh ya. I heard the sample sound in Open back rounded vowel. I think thats not what i had in mind. Sorry. I was looking for something similar to the sound of "war" or "bore". But im not sure which symbol that is. kawaputratorque 14:06, 9 November 2007 (UTC)
- Like IPA: [ˈkwaləˈlʊmpɔ]? The IPA link is to a key that in turn links to sound files. kwami 01:34, 10 November 2007 (UTC)
- Ya, i think its like that. I might put it back in if its okay to include the pronunciation made by KL-lites because of their accent. An extreme version of it, ive heard is: /kɔlɔmpɔ/ :0 kawaputratorque 03:33, 12 November 2007 (UTC)
- Looks good. People do have an interest as to how the natives pronounce their cities. "Toronto" comes out [ˈtɹɒnə] sometimes. kwami 08:29, 12 November 2007 (UTC)

More detail and elaboration needed about Kuala Lumpur, because it is a very internationalised city.
I think this article need more detail and elaboration, since because I m currently live here in Kuala Lumpur. Nevertheless, I want to consider this article to be expanded. Citation for the use of the term KLite

Section needing cleanup - Places of interest
This section seems inappropriate: WP:NOT#TRAVEL. Any idea what should we do with it? I suggest we just summarize and mention a few (5-10) notable sites. And/or re-title it to: Landmarks. The rest we can just export it to wikitravel's article on KL. kawaputratorque 16:07, 4 December 2007 (UTC)
- After reviewing other cities like Tokyo, Los Angles, New York City and Paris, we either could go with cityscapes (talk about architecture, landmarks , parks and maybe shopping) or tourism (a separate article discussing about the things in kl). On the first option, we can combine with the architecture section. what say you? --erwinkarim (talk) 06:28, 5 December 2007 (UTC)
- Ya, using "Cityscapes" sounds good, and putting architecture under this title also good. We could follow New York's style since its a featured article and other cities with featured status. kawaputratorque 17:37, 5 December 2007 (UTC)
New section arrangement
What do you all think about this new arrangement. I also think that there should not be a gallery since most featured article doesnt have one and i think it doesnt help improve the quality of the article:
1) History
2) Geography
- Climate
3) Demographics (remove subheadings and separate "education")
4) Governance (Mayors of KL)
5) Economy
6) Cityscape
- Landmarks (take some from "Places of interest")
- Architecture
7) Culture
- Arts
- Media (includes "KL in popular culture")
- Sports and recreation
- Tourism (take some from "Places of interest")
- Shopping (?)
8) Education
9) Transportation
- Land
- Air
- Public transportation
10) Sister cities
11) References
12) External links
kawaputratorque 03:53, 6 December 2007 (UTC)
- i agree w/ the arrangement, but i'm not sure about the shopping section. should it be in economy too? architecture? who knows... —Preceding unsigned comment added by Erwinkarim (talk • contribs) 00:45, 7 December 2007 (UTC)
- I have done the rearrangement. I have not deleted shopping and gallery though. The landmark section has to be cleaned up to make it less like a travel guide. I also did not make the tourism section. Some things i removed from "Places of interest" are below. Mainly because these places are not in KL:
- Image:Sepang.JPG
- About 25 kilometres west of Kuala Lumpur is the city of Shah Alam, site of the famous Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Mosque, and 10 kilometres away from Shah Alam (35 kilometres away from Kuala Lumpur) is the town of Klang, famed for its seafood and Bah Kut Teh.
- Genting Highlands is a hill top resort near Kuala Lumpur, famous for its casino, and Theme Parks. This is visible from Kuala Lumpur downtown on a clear day and as well on most nights. Dubbed the "City of Entertainment", it is one of Malaysia's most visited tourist attraction.
- Putrajaya, new federal administration centre. This is a modern futuristic looking township that houses all government ministries. The administrative buildings have been built on either side of a long road - in a manner stated to be modelled after the National Mall in Washington DC. At one end of this driveway is the Prime Minister's office and at the other end is a convention centre.
- Sepang International Circuit is a racing circuit located in the outskirts of the city, near the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA). It has been hosting Formula One's Malaysian Grand Prix since 1999. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Kawaputra (talk • contribs) 08:46, 7 December 2007 (UTC)

Future Plans & Proposed projects Facts and Figures
- Do u mean u want to change the title of Public transport in Kuala Lumpur to Transportation in Kuala Lumpur? I think thats fine by me. But if u want to create a separate article, maybe thats not necessary. Cos, even NYC doesnt have an article called Public transport in New York City. Most cities either have one or the other, eg: Public transport in Wellington. In Transport in Melbourne they include public transport under the article. Hmm, but Auckland has 2 separate articles: Transport in Auckland, Public transport in Auckland. I dunno la. Better ask the other editors here or at Talk:Public transport in Kuala Lumpur. kawaputratorque 07:06, 10 December 2007 (UTC)
- At present, i think we still stick to 2 different articles, but when it is needed, it will be merged.Jannisri (talk) 14:09, 10 December 2007 (UTC)
Progress on this page
Looks like the page has improved by leaps and bounds since December 1, 2007. We've cleared up the "Places of Interests" section, cut down the number of images in the gallery and integrated it in the article, broken up sections into separate articles, convert lists into prose, create wikilinks, other general cleanups, and best of all increased sources from a mere 11 (13 footnotes) to 55 (70 footnotes). It would be great if we can get 100 sources. See previous version: Dec 1, and current version: current version. I think if we keep up the pace we could at least manage to get a GA rating, or even better, an FA rating by the end of the month. Try see articles from Wikipedia:Good articles#Geography and places and Wikipedia:Featured articles#Geography and places, to get an idea how a good article looks like. Great job pplz! kawaputratorque 05:14, 12 December 2007 (UTC)

Pornographic photo on this page
Hi, Wikipedia.
My username is NiklawskiMSTM and I'm on my basement computer right now and I didn't feel like logging in. Anyways, I was browsing on my phone and I decided that I'd put in the cities of all my Internet friends into my World Clock app on my phone. One of those cities as Kuala Lumpur. I wanted to find out its time zone, so I looked it up on the Wikipedia app, and much to my dismay, I found a photo that I honestly don't think has anything to do with this city:
There was (refer to the update down below to learn why I said "was") a human female vagina that appeared as if someone had gone onto a porn site and found a video under the "cremapie" category and had taken a screenshot of it and uploaded it and put it in this page.
I am pretty sure it's actually inside the Infobox template, following the end symbols that end the infobox. I'm going to log in, find out why there is a female vagina with ejaculate in it and remove it.
UPDATE: Prior to myself posting this section in the Talk page of it, I checked the page once more and it appears that it has been removed.
Thanks, NiklawskiMSTM
(I'm going to log in to my account and create a new subsection to this section just to validate my statement that I am actually NiklawskiMSTM)

Lead section
I think some things should be removed from the Lead section:
- Area size of Klang Valley - not so important, unsourced (probably never been officially defined)
- Fastest growing metropolitan region in the country - I think Malaysia only have one metropolitan region, so what the point of saying this.
- One of the fastest growing metropolitan area in the world - Unsourced, not sure how to measure this.
I also think a brief history about KL should be included (tin mining, etc). Any other comments on what should be included or excluded in the Lead? kawaputratorque 10:50, 14 December 2007 (UTC)
- Well, to tell you the truth, there are other metropolitan areas in Malaysia, such as Singapore-Johor Bahru, Penang, Ipoh, Subang Jaya and so on (refer to Malaysia: metropolitan areas). OK, fine, the latter is actually just a conurbation. Unfortunately, the metropolitan areas mentioned above are quite insignificant in comparison to the Klang Valley. Nevertheless, I personally think the sentence "It is the fastest growing metropolitan region in the country" should not be omitted, as it is taken from a reliable source, that is The Star.
- We still need a proper consensus, so what do you think? Should we retain the sentence or omit it? Acs4b T C U 05:00, 15 December 2007 (UTC)
- I dont know man. I still think we should omit it. An alternative reason is that KL is already, by far, the largest metropolitan region in the country, so, mentioning that it is the fastest growing metro seems to be not notable/important, although the statement came from a reliable source. Maybe lets first hear what others have to say. kawaputratorque 07:00, 15 December 2007 (UTC)
I agree with kawaputra. I think being the biggest is more notable than the fastest growing metropolitan area. Wai Hong (talk) 09:16, 24 December 2007 (UTC)

damansara
I found this statement inaccurate:-
Damansara area in the north-west of Kuala Lumpur...
Damansara is not in KL. It is in the Petaling district of SelangorSyedhusni (talk) 06:53, 27 January 2008 (UTC)
- Yes, Damansara Utama, D'sara Jaya, Bandar Sri D'sara, etc are part of Petaling district Selangor. So the sentence perhaps should be rewritten, to indicate that One U, Ikea, are not in KL, but within Greater KL in S'gor. However, just to note, some parts of D'sara are actually in KL, eg: Pusat Bandar D'sara, D'sara Heights, Sri Hartamas, etc. kawaputratorque 05:11, 28 January 2008 (UTC)
Grammar and sentence structure
Congratulations on the Good Article status. However, there remain several sentences with incorrect grammar, with more sentences exhibiting awkward phrasing. I will correct what I have found, as my schedule and editing capabilities permit. Regardless, I do urge the primary editor(s) to request a review of the article from an experienced copyeditor of their choice, or from the League of Copyeditors. The issue detracts from the reading experience of an otherwise excellent article, but detailed copyediting sessions should clear up the problem. -- Michael Devore (talk) 23:32, 11 January 2008 (UTC)
- A request has been made to the LOCE. Thanks for the useful comments. kawaputratorque 06:57, 12 January 2008 (UTC)
- The article copy has significantly improved in the past few weeks since my comment. Good work. -- Michael Devore (talk) 23:41, 13 February 2008 (UTC)
