Nickname

[edit]

The article states... His nickname is "Silk." This was given to him by Bryce Harper, when they played against each other in Las Vegas at age 9. It may have been back then but it didn't catch on. I've never heard him called "Silk" by anyone...broadcaster, player, manager, fan. Not sure this nickname is anything more than unimportant trivia. Buster Seven Talk

"unimportant trivia" is a terrible nickname. Nbaxley (talk) 11:06, 25 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Rookie of the Year Awards

[edit]

With regard to the current edit war regarding the Info box awards, I am of the opinion that the Rookie of the YEAR awards do not replace or reduce the importance of the Rookie of the MONTHS award. The Year award is given in addition to the six Month awards. One does not negate the other. The fact that the player received a monthly award is worth noting for the readers information. And, with Bryant, he received two Month awards which, in itself, is notable beyond the Year award. Is their a general protocol for previous winners of both awards? Edit warring is not the answer!. Buster Seven Talk 15:36, 5 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Buster7: I agree with your points outlines above. In reviewing the Monthly ROY award page only 23 players, or about 13% of award recipients, have earned the Monthly ROY award more than once since it was established in 2001. In my judgement, Bryant being 1 of 23 total players to have earned the award more than once is indeed notable. It also appears as thought there is a general correlation between those who have earned the award more than once and earning more notable awards later in their career. While I don't notice a general protocol for this award, I believe it is noteable that Bryant has earned these two awards up to this point in his career.
It also is worth noting here on the talk page, as I saw this referenced in the "View History" section: Wikipedia is not a crystal ball! Cubbie15fan (talk) 22:22 5 November 2015 (UTC)

Article formatting

[edit]

@Yankees10: I'd like to hash out formatting on the article. I thought it'd be helpful for readers to understand when events in Bryant's career took place on a macro-level. Also was trying to follow what seems to be standard formatting style for baseball players. Why do you think the years are unnecessary in the section titles? Cubbie15fan (talk) 15:43, 18 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

It's definitely not standard formatting. There's numerous different styles used in player articles. I've never found the dates to be necessary in the titles since that is what the infobox is for and I find it to be redundant.--Yankees10 18:12, 18 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Is there a specific proposed change to make? I don't see why it should be reformatted from its present version. – Muboshgu (talk) 18:14, 18 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, I see. I'm with Yankees10. There's no reason to have a subsection that includes 100% of the subsection above it. – Muboshgu (talk) 18:15, 18 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Fair enough, I see your point about redundant info between the titles and the infobox. Thanks to both of you for feedback Cubbie15fan (talk) 18:53, 18 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

2016 season

[edit]

Did Bryant play the 2016 season? Of course! He is having a breakout sophomore season with his versatility and hitting as well as fielding many positions...its just thgat there is no mention of it in the article. I'll start to construct some stuff later today. He leads the majors in HRs and is 4th in RBI's. Thats worth mentioning, don-cha-think? Buster Seven Talk 13:21, 3 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

problem

[edit]

Source: "While the actual grievance proceeding has yet to reach a hearing, with all involved seemingly waiting for the new CBA to be negotiated, Bryant says it “never even crossed [his] mind” entering the season. “For me it’s just important to continue to go out there and do what I do, so that I can help the team in any way possible in where we’re at today,” Bryant said. “It’s just important for me to not even worry about it right now because it takes away from so much of what we have going this year. And that was last year’s news.”"

This article: "As of June 2016, the grievance had yet to reach a hearing. About the grievance Bryant has said, "For me it’s just important to continue to go out there and do what I do, so that I can help the team in any way possible in where we’re at today,” Bryant added, “It’s just important for me to not even worry about it right now because it takes away from so much of what we have going this year. And that was last year’s news."

The source in this BLP is "mlbtraderumors.com". if it is not a reliable source, it should not be used, and the preciseness of the quoting verges on copyvio territory. Collect (talk) 22:13, 7 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

MLBTR is fine. Bryant's quote adds little, and shouldn't be included. – Muboshgu (talk)

Players position

[edit]

This diff adds "First baseman" to Bryant's infobox. The same has happened at Rizzo's page for when he changes mitts and is considered a "second baseman" when he is not really playing second base but is crowding the plate. I just wonder how necessary these infobox changes really are. Willson Contreras has played first, third and two outfield positions in addition to catching. Was Travis Wood listed as an outfielder last year when he played left field? Just sayin'.... Buster Seven Talk 17:11, 24 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

It's excessive and not necessary. Bryant isn't a "first baseman" if he plays there once. Bryan Mitchell played an inning of first base, but he's still a pitcher. Freddie Freeman is talking about playing third base, and people jumped in to make that edit, even though he hasn't done it yet, and may not at all. Bryant is 3B/OF. – Muboshgu (talk) 17:56, 24 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

To do tomorrow. Courcelles (talk) 02:53, 24 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Alright, I'm ready to go with fixes. – Muboshgu (talk) 03:03, 24 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • DO we need to mention he made his MLB debut in 2015 twice in the lead?
  • "Playing for the school's varsity baseball team all four years, he recorded a .418 batting average, a .958 slugging percentage (SLG), 103 hits, and 47 career home runs." What's sourcing these statistics?
    • The citation behind the American Legion sentence following it, "All eyes on Bonanza slugger Kris Bryant, a likely first-round draft pick", covers all of what precedes it. – Muboshgu (talk) 16:07, 24 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • "Bryant played collegiate summer ba−seball for the Chatham Anglers of the Cape Cod Baseball League. Bryant batted 29-for-130 (.223) with three home runs and 16 RBIs with Chatham." Don't need to repeat "Chatham" twice in one sentence. Could just drop the last two words.
  • "He was also rated as the best hitter" By whom?
    • The source following that, "Cubs get it right with Bryant", says "They got it right in taking University of San Diego third baseman Kris Bryant, the best hitter in the draft." I agree that needs more specificity. – Muboshgu (talk) 16:09, 24 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • "He hit .333 with five home runs for Daytona, and helped them win the Class A-Advanced championship." Source?
  • Ref 34 is dead. We're going to need another source for the whole service time nonsense the Cubs pulled.

Intermediate save, More to come after I chase the cats off the keyboard. Courcelles (talk) 14:17, 24 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

  • "Bryant batted for a .318 average, a .455 on-base percentage, and earned 10 walks and 10 RBI." For what period? All of 2015?
  • "With the Cubs finishing the season, 97–65, the team clinched a Wild Card spot and it was their first playoff berth in seven years." Source?
  • "As of June 2016, the grievance had yet" Any update?
No update yet. Best, Barkeep49 (talk) 16:14, 24 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
As of April 2017, no update. I will add that. – Muboshgu (talk) 16:25, 24 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Is fanrags RS? If so here's something from Mar of this year saying no resolution (I know I read something to this effect on twitter this spring too from a beat writer but...) [1] Best, Barkeep49 (talk) 19:45, 24 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Fanrags, like DNAInfo, should be reliable. It's also lesser known than the big publications, but a lot of these authors are serious people. – Muboshgu (talk) 03:37, 1 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • "During the 2016 postseason, Bryant hit for a .308 average with three home runs and eight RBI." Unsourced
  • "He finished second to Nolan Arenado of the Colorado Rockies as the starting NL third baseman i" Second in the voteing for starting 3B, I assume?
  • What makes ref 84, dnainfo, reliable?
  • What about ref 59, the trade rumors website?
This source is cited by other WP:RS e.g. [2] [3] suggesting it meets the standard of WP:NEWSORG. Best, Barkeep49 (talk) 16:14, 24 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Good enough for me, if the WaPo and WSJ are citing them. Courcelles (talk) 19:28, 24 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • This is not part of the GA criteria, but there are multiple problems with reference formatting that would get you dinged at a potential FAC.

Done for now! Courcelles (talk) 15:57, 24 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Courcelles: Ready for reconsideration. I've made other edits in addition to what's documented above. – Muboshgu (talk) 03:38, 1 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

That's all I've got. Great work. Courcelles (talk) 15:13, 1 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Courcelles: Lead expanded to three paragraphs, 2017 ASG mention included, and some more things added as well. – Muboshgu (talk) 22:52, 1 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Bryant

[edit]

@Muboshgu: continuing our discussion from WikiProject Baseball in really reading this article again it's definitely much much much closer to what I'm talking about than the other examples I listed. I used it as an example because I remember when it was under review. In terms quotes here are a few from and about Bryant which I think are compelling at some level and could be incorporated (sometimes with a shorter version):

  • "He’s 10 times the person that he is a player. Kris probably would’ve made a million bucks being a dentist. He would’ve found a way to do that by 25. He doesn’t need baseball." [4]
  • "“This game is all about ‘What have you done for me lately?’” Bryant said. “And boy did I get to experience that last year" [5]
  • "It's all downhill from here," Bryant joked on a conference call after learning of his honor. "This year has certainly been one of the best years of my life, winning the World Series, and now this is just icing on the cake." ""I feel like good guys finish first, so being humble and being a good role model for kids, that's something I strive for more than putting up good numbers or any of my individual goals," Bryant said. "I don't want to be that person people look at and say is too cocky. I just want to do my job, put smiles on people's faces and win a lot of games along the way. This year was the perfect way to illustrate that." [6]
  • “I’ve never seen him vary from the person he is today,” said Matt Lawrence, 48, a lifelong Cubs fan and, a dozen years ago, the coach of a Southern Nevada travel team that included the past two NL MVPs, Bryant and Nationals outfielder Bryce Harper. “He embodies everything you’d want in a son and everything you’d want in a guy your daughter married.” [7]
  • I'll also note that I found sourcing which talks about how Bryant was inspired by Ted Williams. It's in that SI article and this NYT article among other places

Hope some of that might be of some help for this article. Best, Barkeep49 (talk) 22:47, 25 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Barkeep49, thanks for providing this. I hadn't seen anything linking Bryant to Ted Williams, for instance. I'll take a look and incorporate what I can. Or you can if you have the time. – Muboshgu (talk) 22:59, 25 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
