This review is transcluded from Talk:Kochi/GA2. The edit link for this section can be used to add comments to the review.

Reviewer: Force Radical (talk · contribs) 11:04, 7 January 2018 (UTC)

I will take on this review of Kochi as a good article. I am a relatively new user to GA reviewing doing this as a supplement of my nom of West Bengal. I will after completing the review keep this GA open for a third opinion. In case of a disagreement a third opinion can be sought. I will continue from hereafter by pinging you, as and when I will have time. Happy New Year! — Force Radical ( TalkContribs ) 11:04, 7 January 2018 (UTC)
Shady59-On a preliminary look I would like you to improve the overall sourcing of the article. Please make sure all paragraphs atleast have a citation at their end (which corroborates what is said in the paragraph) and please remove the bare urls. The rest of the review will be done later — Force Radical ( TalkContribs ) 11:15, 7 January 2018 (UTC)
Force Radical - Happy New Year to you too. I actually checked for all dead urls before submitting the nomination. Would appreciate if you could point out the ones which you stumbled upon. Meanwhile, I'll check for missing citations & add them. Shady59 (talk) 03:23, 8 January 2018 (UTC)

Official Report 1 (Summary before and after fixes according to comments)

This article would fail its Good article nomination. This is how the article, as of January 8, 2018, compares against the six good article criteria:

1. Well written?: Pass Pass (Worked on during GA review)
2. Verifiable?: Pass Pass (Worked on during GA review)
3. Broad in coverage?: Pass Pass
4. Neutral point of view?: Pass Pass
5. Stable?: Pass Pass
6. Images?: Pass Pass

The article in its current state FailsPass Passes the GA criteria. The article needs a far more rigorous citation system and there are some layout issues which need to be resolved — Force Radical ( TalkContribs ) 06:52, 8 January 2018 (UTC)

Unofficial Report 1 (Issues with the article)

@Shady59:-I have taken a look at the article and have identified few changes which are needed:

  • Fill out the bare urls used as references (You can use the tool listed at WP:Refill to make the work automated)
  • Please replace all the external links which show up as red or orange in [this link] Done
  • Put File:Vyttila Mobility Hub BNC.jpg and File:Marine Drive Kochi Night View DSW.jpgin the {{Panorama}} Done
  • Remove the pin-point on the map of Kochi Done
  • Besides this, the article has some layout and grammar issues. I would recommend you to put it up for a copy-edit here. They have a backlog drive going on and if your lucky someone may do the copy-edit within this month.
Don't do it now. I'll bring the specific problems up on this page on Monday and you can fix them then. In the mean time give the article your best CE by reading it thoroughly. — Force Radical ∞ ( TalkContribs ) 11:19, 12 January 2018 (UTC)
  • I will be tagging the article with quite a lot of [citation needed] tags (Within this week). Please fill them up with proper citation

I am putting this review  On hold for a period of 14 days (during this time feel free to ask anything by pinging me here) after this period I will re-review the article to see if it passes the GA criteria or not — Force Radical ( TalkContribs ) 06:52, 8 January 2018 (UTC)

Force Radical Thanks a lot for your efforts. I'll do my best to cover everything you mentioned. Shady59 (talk) 07:21, 8 January 2018 (UTC)
@Shady59:-I have taken a look at the changes over the week. I would suggest that you try your best to get rid of the sourcing issues over the weekend. Once that is done I'll start on the prose review.(I expected you to put it up for CE on last Monday but since you didn't I'll bring up the prose problems here and you can solve them .Since with the current status of their backlog it seems unlikely that the article will be accepted before February) — Force Radical ( TalkContribs ) 07:36, 12 January 2018 (UTC)
@Force Radical: I'm fixing the sources at the moment. Was busy the past few days & I'm trying to find time in between. But I think I'll be able to fix all the mentioned sources today itself. Shady59 (talk) 09:54, 12 January 2018 (UTC)
@Force Radical: Meanwhile I've replaced all the dead & suspicious links on the page. The page now has 0 dead/suspicious links. Thanks to the dispenser tool which you suggested. I'm now working on the remaining citations which needs to be added. Shady59 (talk) 10:50, 12 January 2018 (UTC)
@Shady59:That's good!! I would suggest you make the article compliant with WP:BURL and give the article a thorough reading and copyedit so that the article will have almost no outstanding problems by Monday when I'll start bringing up the prose problems here.  — Force Radical ∞ ( TalkContribs ) 07:56, 13 January 2018 (UTC)
@Force Radical: Checked & Fixed all Bare URLs. The article now has 0 WP:BURL as per the refill tool. Shady59 (talk) 10:44, 15 January 2018 (UTC)

7 Day Re-review section

This section will be used after the 7 day waiting period
@Shady59:-There is still a some outstanding issues with the article which need to be resolved. Please start solving the issues listed below as and when they are given.(I will take a long time to do this )

  • south-west coast of India bybordering the Laccadive Sea.
  • Called as the Queen of the Arabian Sea
  • With a corporation limit population of 612,343, and metropolitan population of 2.1 million, Kochi city is also a part of the Greater Cochin region, which is the largest urban agglomeration in Kerala and is classified as a Tier-II city by the Government of India.Separate the bold section into another sentence.
  • Kochi was one of the 28 Indian cities found to be among the emerging 440 global cities
  • Replace all instances of "industry" in the lede with company
  • Ancient travellers and tradesmen referred to Kochi in their writings, variously alluding to it as CocymCochymCochin, and Kochi.
  • The Cochin Jewish community called Cochin as Kogin (קוגין), which is seen in the seal of the synagogue[31] which is still owned by the community.[31]
  • KochiIt rose to significance as a trading centre after the port Muziris around Kodungallur (Cranganore) was destroyed by massive flooding of Periyar in 1341.[36]Please do the same judiciously for other instances as well.
  • The city is administered by the Kochi Corporation, headed by a mayor.Administered sounds odd here
  • However, Kochi Police officials defended that in major crimes such as murders and kidnapping, the city registered a low crime rate even behind other cities in the state.[70]Defended whom ?
  • Thrikkakara is P. T. THOMASI see no reason why that person's name should be in SCREAMING CAPS (Its a pet peeve of mine this caps business). In the same sentences please add conjunctions to smoothen it out.
  • Construction and manufacturing combined contributes 37%, and trade, tourism and hospitality together provides another 20% Of what ?
  • India by World Bank, Doing Business Group
  • tourism is one of the strongest drivers of the local economy.Drivers sounds odd
  • Social Service Organisation seems to have a problem of undue weight. The last two paragraphs seem to be designed to promote the particular entities mentioned
  • Please do a through check of the references section I can still see
    • a Bare Url(http://www.jnnurm.nic.in/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/KOCHICDP.pdf#page=7) which probably needs to be expanded manually
    • a google search Ref 73
    • reference to secondary sources(Other encyclopedia) 39,41,147
    • References without a proper title 9,55,108,109,110,111,175
  • Acess dates are missing in quite a lot of references

@Force Radical: Fixed everything mentioned above. By the way, are access dates in all refs necessary? Because even in many featured articles, I see that the access date is missing in a lot of refs. Anyways I always provide access date in all the refs which I personally provide. Thanks again for your efforts. Shady59 (talk) 11:36, 19 January 2018 (UTC)
@Shady59:-That is a difficult question to answer, I guess except for pdfs, journals and books most of them need access dates to determine if the links are dead or not. Request to add more details about Ernakulam. The article says the city of Cochin is often referred to as Ernakulam. An additional sentence stating that Ernakulam forms the central, mainland portion of the city of Cochin will make more sense to that sentence. Regarding the Neutrality tag in Kochi article

The statements in this article's Lead section seem to be promotional and have an advertising tone instead of being Neutral/Encyclopedic. They don't seem to adhere to WP:Neutral point of view.

Please note that the Lead is the most-read section in any article. The Lead should be an unreferenced summary of referenced statements.

Some of the Neutrality issues found in the Lead section are

  • "Ranked seventh in the list of top 10 cities to visit in the world in 2020" - Promotional marketing statement in the lead
  • "which attracts international artists and tourists" - Tourism again in the lead
  • "The city was ranked the sixth best tourist destination in India" - Tourism again in the lead
  • "Kochi ranks first in the total number of international and domestic tourist arrivals in Kerala" - Another mention of tourism in the lead. These appear to be advertising tourism
  • "Kochi was one of the 28 Indian cities among the emerging 440 global cities that will contribute 50% of the world GDP by the year 2025, in a 2011 study done by the McKinsey Global Institute" - The provided citation mentions about 10 clusters across 14 Indian cities. It is not at all related to the statement. The statement seems to be promotional
  • "Kochi was ranked the topmost emerging future megacity in India by global professional services firm JLL" - This statement along with its citations can be placed in the 'Economy' section instead of the Lead
  • The laundry list of companies and colleges in the Lead - Why is this huge laundry list needed in the lead? It's clearly promotional and along with the earlier tourism mentions, are possibly WP:UNDUE.

Also, this article is listed as WP:GA, and a sizable number of statements are lacking citations.

Kindly note, this is just a sample, and I haven't gone through this article in detail. But taking just the lead itself into consideration, the article doesn't adhere to WP:Neutral point of view.

Cheers,
Aviator423 (talk) 07:18, 6 April 2020 (UTC)

It doesn't concern with WP:NPOV as everything is cited. Moreover WP:NPOV is applicable for the whole article, not just the lead section. The article was passed as WP:GA after thorough assessment & meeting all WP:GACR. You seem new to Wikipedia. Please go through WP:OPINION and you need to understand that Wikipedia is a WP:WIP and Perfection is not required. Shady59 (talk) 23:26, 10 April 2020 (UTC)
WP:GACR requires that the article is written in a Neutral point of view. It is one of the main criteria. Having advertising statements in the Lead section itself shows that there is high editorial bias in this article. I have contributed significantly to Good Articles and Featured Articles. I am well aware of WP:GACR and WP:FACR. The Neutrality tag also mentions to address the issues before removing the tag.
Contrary to WP:NPOV, In Kochi, all ADVERTISEMENTS are appearing in the Lead itself ! Also the lead should be an unreferenced summary of referenced statements - WP:LEADCITE.
For your information, adding citations isn't going to make a statement neutral. Citations pertain to WP:VERIFY and are not related to WP:NPOV.
Also, there are plenty of statements in this article that are lacking citations. That's mentioned in another section in the article's Talk page.
The GA review happened more than 2 years ago. IMO, Kochi article is NOT a WP:GA at present.
Aviator423 (talk) 08:34, 12 April 2020 (UTC)
  • The ones you call as ADVERTISEMENTS are facets of a city which you find literally in all city articles. Something which is true to a place is NOT AN ADVERTISEMENT.
  • As already mentioned, WP:NPOV is applicable for the whole article, not just the lead section. If a statement in the lead section doesn't adhere to WP:NPOV, then it doesn't mean the statement can be moved to a subsection. The WP:NPOV remains the same throughout the article.
  • Only 4 statements have been added since WP:GA review happened and all were cited. So the quality of the article remains the same. Shady59 (talk) 11:29, 13 April 2020 (UTC)

Many statements are lacking citations in this GA

By looking at just the first 5 sections out of the 15 sections in this article, many statements are lacking citations

Etymology section

  • "After the arrival of the Portuguese, and later the British, the name Cochin stuck as the official appellation."

History section

  • "In meantime, the Royal Family of Kochi relocated the capital of Kochi Kingdom to Thrissur, leaving nominal authority over Islands of Kochi."

  • "By the 1870s, the capital of Kochi Kingdom was relocated again to Kochi Suburb of Tripunithura."
  • "In 1910, Ernakulam became the administrative capital of Kochi Kingdom with establishment of Royal Secretariat and State Durbar. "
  • "In 1925, Kochi legislative assembly was constituted due to public pressure on the state."
  • "Towards the early 20th century, trade at the port had increased substantially, and the need to develop the port was greatly felt."
  • "Harbour engineer Robert Bristow was brought to Kochi in 1920 under the direction of Lord Willingdon, then the Governor of Madras."
  • "The King of Travancore was the Rajpramukh of the Travancore-Cochin Union from 1949 to 1956."
  • "The city's economic growth gathered momentum after economic reforms in India introduced by the central government in the early-1990s. "

  • "Predominant rock types found here are Archaean-basic dykes, Charnockites and Gneisses."
  • "An ecologically sensitive area, the Mangalavanam Bird Sanctuary is located in the central part of the city."

Civic administration section

  • "Earlier; Fort Kochi, Mattancherry and Ernakulam were the three Municipalities in Cochin area, which was later merged to form the Cochin Corporation. "
  • "The city is divided into five zones and each zone under a circle officer."
  • "It operates 19 police stations functioning under the Home Ministry of Government of Kerala. An anti-corruption branch of the Central Bureau of Investigation also operates out of the city. "
