Translations
[edit]This article contains several translations of Issa's poems. Could someone please note the identify of the translators. Patiwat 23:53, 4 May 2006 (UTC)
Formatting problems
[edit]The article was not displaying properly, cut off half-way through the title of the article. I have restored the article to the most recent version that wasn't giving me display issues, and put back textual changes that have occurred since. I excluded previous '<!-- -->' comments (feel free to re-enter them if necessary). Some Unicode characters may also need to be amended.--Jeffro77 06:32, 1 October 2006 (UTC)
More formatting problems
[edit]I also had difficulty with display problems -- after I tried to attribute quotations and translations in footnotes, using the directions from "Wikipedia:Citing sources," the article cut off half way down. The only way I could restore it was by deleting the fotonotes. (Matt Theado; April 20, 2008

Image of Issa
[edit]I did a Google image search and found a picture of Issa (same picture on several web sites). It looks like it's from an old Japanese painting. Probably no copyright. I don't know how to upload it. Would be nice if someone who knows how could do it.114.161.79.57 (talk) 13:55, 30 May 2009 (UTC)
- "Probably no copyright" won't cut it. You'll need to establish the position unequivocally. See WP:UPIMAGE --Yumegusa (talk) 14:41, 30 May 2009 (UTC)
Not a priest
[edit]The lead says "Japanese poet and Buddhist priest" but this is a misunderstanding, Issa never was a monk or a priest. He jokingly declared himself, "Priest Issa of Haiku Temple" ("Haikai Temple's Lay Brother One-Cup-of-Tea", really) but that was only related to his practice of poetry.
Cf. online:
- « Possibly Issa also worked as a clerk at a Buddhist temple. [...] In 1792 he gave up the name Yataro and took the pen name Issa, Haikai-ji Nyudo Issa-bo (Temple of Haiku Lay Brother Issa). In one poem he said: "With spring's arrival, / Yataro becomes reborn / as Issabo". » <http://www.kirjasto.sci.fi/koba.htm>
- « Though his real name was Kobayashi Yatarô, he chose Issa (Cup-of-Tea) as his haiku name. He called himself "Shinano Province's Chief Beggar" and "Priest Cup-of-Tea of Haiku Temple." » <http://haikuguy.com/issa/aboutissa.html>
Also, the lead should mention that he's better known as just Issa, which means Cup-of-Tea ("One [cup of] Tea", really). 62.147.37.95 (talk) 17:01, 22 July 2009 (UTC)
The text now says "lay Buddhist priest". I'm not familiar with the details of Jodo Shinshu, but in most of the religious world this would be a contradiction in terms. One is EITHER a member of the clergy (e.g. a priest) OR of the laity. Could someone clarify whether this is a legitimate description within Jodo Shinshu, or whether it is indeed a confusion of terms? Thank you. Hundovir (talk) 09:42, 12 March 2015 (UTC)
Regarding the term "lay Buddhist priest": the term "lay priest" is indeed used in the Buddhist world. It refers to people who are ordained and have certain priestly duties yet they live in the secular community. So "lay Buddhist priest" is not a confusion of terms. The issue is whether the term is misapplied when Issa is referred to as a lay Buddhist priest. From the evidence above it appears that Issa was not a Buddhist priest, lay or otherwise, and the description should be removed from this page. Jonfinnie (talk) 01:27, 24 August 2016 (UTC)
