Is there room on this page for another picture of the church? I have a beautiful picture of it with snow falling all around it. I wanted to ask everyone first before changing anything. NPPyzixBlan 01:13, 16 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Maybe there's room for a separate article on the church? Like who built it, and what about its architecture is considered beautiful.. --62.46.145.110 11:59, 13 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Is there any reason to have an unoffical IRC channel mentioned in an encyclopedia? It seems like a bad joke to me. Poktirity 11:53, 1 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I wonder why this sentence reads "Kiruna will gradually move northwest to the foot of the Luossavaara mountain, by the lake of Luossajärvi." The word "vaara" means "mountain" (also can be a large hill) and the word "järvi" means lake. I don't think the translation of, let's say, "Lake Placid" would be "Lake Placid Järvi"; but simply "Placid Järvi". I think the sentence and similar ones should read: "Kiruna will gradually move northwest to the foot of Mount Luossa, by the Luossa lake." That or something similar; the current version seems redundant and a poor way to translate placenames. pete6982 03:04, 18 January 2007 (PST)

Nope, that is often how such a river is described. Just search for Torneälven river

The name "Luossavaara", "Jukkasjärvi", and so on, are the names in Swedish, even though their origins are Finnish. You say "berget Luossavaara" (the mountain Luossavaara), not "Luossaberget".

I removed the reference to the train company SJ AB, since they don't traffic northern Sweden. Ilmarinen swe 22:30, 24 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Shouldn't we add reference of the fact this is the hometown of Borje Salming?72.136.211.197 13:01, 24 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

A more official sketch will be published early in spring 2008, which will then be discussed with various interest groups for a next version.

Spring 2008 was half a year ago. Is there a more official sketch? If so, shouldn't the article be updated? JIP | Talk 19:31, 21 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Improvements

[edit]

Hi, I'm going to work on improving and updating this article from various sources in Swedish and English. I want to get it up to FA standard. It has a long way to go but I'm sure there is enough to say about Kiruna to make it FA! Help is welcome, of course. --Gerrit CUTEDH 17:51, 9 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Move

[edit]

The following sentence:

The land north of Kurravaara is roadless, uninhabited land, partly barren and partly birch forest, up to the Norwegian and Finnish borders at Treriksröset.

Probably belongs in Kurravaara.68.148.145.190 (talk) 10:46, 22 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

naah, it might belong in Kiruna (municipality) though. But I believe it is relevant for Kiruna as well, to describe the geography of the surroundings a bit. --Gerrit CUTEDH 11:16, 28 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Incorrect weather extremes

[edit]

Hi, the high for december was listed as -2, but last december it was +5: see for example www.temperatur.nu or www.smhi.se or http://www.irf.se/weather/?parameter=temperature I removed it. --Gerrit CUTEDH 11:14, 28 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

phosphorus - not phosphorous, please - when you refer to the element. ("phosphorous" refers to the divalent form of phosphorus in a compound - eg phosphorous acid)

Most authors who are non-technical seem to make this mistake these days! Regards 124.178.255.194 (talk) 07:38, 21 October 2011 (UTC)Chris McSweeney, Northgate Consulting Pty Ltd, Perth, Western Australia chrismcs@amnet.net.au[reply]

Merger proposal

I propose that Redevelopment of Kiruna should be merged to this article. The article is way too short to be a "main article" for the proposed moving of the town. It's even shorter than the section about moving the town in this article. And this article isn't really overly long itself, so it could easily use more content. JIP | Talk 18:19, 28 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Agree. Redevelopment of Kiruna es essentially too short. Is has not grown much in almost 2 months of existence (as many stub-sized articles do). When it (as a section ) grows big enought it can be split off. Chiton (talk) 02:02, 20 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Separate article about Kiruna town relocation

[edit]

For some readers, the gradual forced relocation of the town will be the most interesting aspect of both the Town Kiruna and the Kiruna Mine. News articles about this will bring readers to WP. Both articles must mention the subject, but it is unclear which article should be more detailed. Perhaps the solution is to have a separate article about just the Relocation?-73.61.15.160 (talk) 15:01, 22 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Names of Kirunavaara and Luossavaara

[edit]

This article states "Anders Hackzell [...] gave the mountains of the area their Swedish language names Fredriks berg (original Finnish name still in use as well: Kiirunavaara) and Berget Ulrika Eleonora (original Finnish name still in use as well: Luossavaara)," and while I don't doubt Hackzell's naming of the mountains as such, saying that the original Finnish names are still in use as well seems rather incorrect; not because they aren't used but but because they are the only names used.

These Swedish names aren't even mentioned on their respective Swedish language wiki pages (nor Kiruna's Swedish page) and I think it should be clarified that Hackzell's names are not in use today.

The fact that Hackzell's names aren't in use today is also clear considering that you can't really find anything online in Swedish which refers to these places by Hackzell's names. Försjän (talk) 06:48, 12 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
