"Use in Japanese media"
[edit]I've just removed this unfinished section from the article:
- The Japanese name "Kira(キラ in katakana)" is common in the fiction of that language. The name literally means "light" or "shininess" and may be interpreted as implying that a given character is good. However,
At least the second sentence seems redundant. --zenohockey (talk) 20:25, 18 August 2008 (UTC)
Kira is of Sanskrit origin
[edit]I have edited that Kira is of Sanskrit, Persian and Egyptian origin. I have a photocopy of an old book where I took most of the edits I made from on this name, however I do not have the original title of this book. The entry on Tutankhamen I took from: http://www.tenfactsabout.co.uk/041108tutankhamun.htm —Preceding unsigned comment added by 145.100.29.229 (talk) 15:12, 4 February 2010 (UTC)
Nowhere in the references it says that the Egyptian name is of Sansrit origin. Sanskrit name is Kiran while the Egyptian name is Ki-Ra referring to the Egyptian god of Sun. I think unless we have better sources, we should rewrite the sentence.--Nikhil Sanjay Bapat (talk) 19:40, 15 August 2012 (UTC)
Kira has a very bad meaning in Persian
[edit]I don't know wich troll has come with this. (at least his source is not viable). But Kyra has a very bad meaning in Persian; It means his/her dick.... So I'm going to remove it.

- What do you propose to remove precisely? Debresser (talk) 16:17, 11 April 2013 (UTC)
- The Persian word "kir" has that meaning; a citation for that was moved to Talk:KIR. I have tagged the dead link for "Kyra" in this article. – Fayenatic London 12:08, 12 April 2013 (UTC)
Japanese family name
[edit]@Marlin Setia1: @Debresser: several edits have been made disputing the removal of male characters for whom Kira is a family name. Kira may also be a family name for some of the female characters, but they have not yet been removed on that rationale.
To resolve both these issues I propose moving the page from Kira (given name) to Kira (name). Then all the characters can be retained, which will be most helpful in English Wikipedia. – Fayenatic London 22:09, 31 March 2016 (UTC)
- In favor. Debresser (talk) 08:04, 1 April 2016 (UTC)
- Sure. Marlin Setia1 (talk) 06:52, 2 April 2016 (UTC)

Gender
[edit]I notice in the infobox it says that Kira is a mostly female name. Is there a source for Kira being used as a boy's name? --KiraDavies94 (talk) 15:53, 27 August 2018 (UTC)
- I'm not aware of any real-life cases, but Kira appears to be the given name for the masculine fictional characters Kira Yamato and Kira Yoshikage. – Fayenatic London 20:44, 27 August 2018 (UTC)
