The result of the move request was: Moved Kiliya → Kiliia, Kiliya Raion → Kiliia Raion per nom. No such user (talk) 14:37, 18 May 2021 (UTC)
– Move to Kiliia, the romanized spelling of Кілія per WP:UKR, and for WP:CONSISTENCY of spelling with other place names in Ukraine. Raions (districts) are named in the pattern X Raion (Ukrainian is Кілійський раіон, Kiliiskyi raion). Subject-specific reliable sources will be most likely to use the name derived from Ukrainian.
Second choice, move to Kilia which shows up in most search results, but is also the spelling used for other places, and not clearly the most common spelling for this place.
Background: this town in Ukrainian former Bessarabia was the location of a Genoese fortress. Histories refer to it in Latin, Greek, Romanian, and Russian-language contexts. The modern name is spelled several ways, and it is also called Nova Kiliia (Нова Кілія) in Ukrainian, Kilia Nova in Latin, or Chilia Nouă in Romanian.
Not to be confused with
- Stara Kiliia (Chilia Veche, immediately across the river in Romania)
- Kilia, Turkey (Şile, source of the Kilia figurine)
The evidence for WP:COMMONNAME is weird and confusing, but strictly speaking the most common name appears to be Kilia. G Books results, per WP:SET, “since 2010” when current romanization was officially adopted, adding “Ukraine” to filter out other places (I don’t think it’s working as expected).
- Kiliia “about 10 results,” 4 shown
- Kiliya “4 results,” 4 shown
- Kilia “Page 2 of about 1,560 results,” only 12 shown
If you select a longer period, or search Google Scholar, you get many more results, but Kilia still comes out most common. For the surrounding raion, there are a paltry few results each for several spellings, including the official romanization Kiliiskyi raion.
I am suggesting that we disambiguate the title by using the official Ukrainian romanization, rather than Kilia which is used for other places, and is recommended by WP:UKR for when there is no clear common name. —Michael Z. 19:36, 16 April 2021 (UTC)—Relisting.
