Population figures

Information icon Hello, I'm Sunnyeceku. Regarding to your reversion to an article, Khulna, in spite of providing authentic reference, you have removed my edit from the article. The reference link was from the city corporation website, and you wanted to claim that they are not trustworthy. According to the last KCC election 2013, there were more than 800 thousands voters. How it can be possible that there is a population of 600k only? I born in Khulna, spent 26 years of my life in Khulna. Even I have provided an authentic link. You said that you trust only census, do you know that census held in every 10 years in Bangladesh? The article is about the city, in that case we can follow the data from the city corporation website. I hope you will reinstate my contribution. Thanks. you can leave me a message on my talk page. Thank you. Sunnyeceku (talk) 22:38, 6 December 2017 (UTC+2)

@Sunnyeceku: Firstly the exact link you provided here always produces "Connection Failed" when I try it. I have found the "About Khulna" page [1], and it says, literally "Khulna city, an area of ---- sq km, and district, an area of ------ sq km have 1.4 million and --- million people respectively", which isn't quite the 1.5 million of your edit, and the three blanks don't really inspire much confidence in the one figure given. As the article is now it says "As of the 2011 census, the city has a population of 663,342", clearly showing that the figure is 6 years old. According to The Independent BD there were 440,566 voters at the KCC election on June 2013. It seems very unlikely that number of voters has legitimately doubled over the last four years, unless the city limits have just been expanded. Batternut (talk) 21:39, 6 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Batternut: I am not very good at wikipedia editing. Probably I have placed the reference in a wrong manner. but whenever I am looking for KCC website[2], I found all of your mentioned blanks filled with number. The area is 46 km2, and population is 1.5 million right now. I don't know why you can't access the page. If you give your email id, probably I can give you screenshots, or the whole webpage in pdf format. And one more information, there are 3 new thanas have been created in Khulna City Corporation in recent years. Sunnyeceku (talk) 21:39, 6 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Interesting. I don't think your editing is at fault, I think it is either the site behaving strangely perhaps for page requests from outside the country, or some strange routing problem between me (in the UK) and the site. Your similar link above produced the surrounding boilerplate for the page, but no content at all!
Anyway, I see the creation of the new thanas mentioned by the Dhaka Tribune. That news article (and similar that I have seen) is not explicit, they could be new areas within KCC, or in the metro area, rather than expansion of the KCC. Thana's are used in a policing context more than civic administration, though I see that responsibilities can overlap. Indeed as Khulna Metropolitan Police (KMP) was created to cover "Khulna Metropolitan Area" rather than just the city. Is it possible the KMP covers a wider area than the KCC? It adds to my feeling that the 1.4 or 1.5 million estimated population is within the metro area rather than the city. Batternut (talk) 23:37, 6 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Batternut: well, I am also accessing the link from outside of Bangladesh (Finland). Whenever I am accessing via my institutional network, it shows the connection failed thing. But i can access that via my home network. I guess it is the problem of the link of not having secure connection. And as far I know, KMP covers only KCC area. Anyway, if you want to be strict on your decision, you should update the population of KCC to 751k (according to BBS website, cencus report of 2011, Khulna, Page 19)[3]. Or let me know how can I share a screenshot of that page. Sunnyeceku (talk) 14:19, 7 December 2017 (UTC+2)
Just now I have tried to access KCC website again, via my institutional network. It was successfull. I can access the site[4], about KCC menu and then click on Basic statistics sub-menu. Probably it is the problem of routing, as you said, in UK. You can try from different IP then. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sunnyeceku (talkcontribs) 12:26, 7 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
The Basic statistics sub-menu page works for me! It shows "Population: 15,00,689", but also "Area: 45.65 km2". The area figure is demonstrably wrong though - the (very useful) "District Statistics 2011" document you linked says the KCC area is 64.78km² (on page 17), and even the 2001 census said it was 59.57km² (on page 5). That makes the khulnacity.org stats look pretty dodgy. I'll put inI was going to put in the District Statistics 2011 figures 64.78km²/751k, even though the host is only an ip address, however that doc is dated June 2013, and the currently cited Union Statistics doc is dated March 2014, and they are both BBS 2011 census docs.
