Khirwar is NOT a language, but one among the 30 tribes who speak Palamu as their regional language.
[edit]1 Introduction 1.1 The Palmuwa Speech Community Palmuwa is a regional language spoken in Chattisgarh and Jharkhand with an estimated population of more than three million people. The language name ‘Palmuwa’ has not yet been recognized in official circles. The Ethnologue (Lewis et. al. 2015) lists this language as ‘Kherwar’ (ISO 639-3: kwx). However, Kherwar is not the name of a language but rather the name of one of the tribes that speak Palmuwa. Our research indicates that this language is likely the mother tongue of more than thirty tribes in the region. Among these tribes are the Lohara, Bhuiya, Dhusad, Mahali, Badahai, Dhanuk, Khori, Chamar, Baniya, Malak, Kherwar, Chero, Pandit, Halwai, Julha, Kumar, Bhumihar, Kahar, Nuniya, Ahir, Takoor, Rajput, Dhobbi, Munda, Kharia, and Gadari. In addition, Palmuwa is spoken by the Oraon people as a language of wider communication. There is some question concerning the language family to which Palmuwa belongs. Grierson (1964) classified this language as Munda and the Ethnologue (Lewis et. al. 2015) lists it as Dravidian. However, most of the vocabulary we have collected is of Indo-Aryan origin and the phonemic system is most similar to that of Indo-Aryan languages. Perhaps the Palmuwa speakers once spoke a Dravidian or Munda language, but what is now spoken is almost certainly Indo-Aryan. This classification requires further research.
1.2 The Study
This phonological study was undertaken in order to determine the uniqueness of the
Palmuwa language by documenting its sound system. This language is listed as ‘Kherwar’
in the Ethnologue and this speech variety has not yet been recognised by the government as
a seperate language. It is our hope that this study can contribute to a name change and status
alteration. This phonology write-up support our contention that the name and status of the
language should be reviewed. The dialect studied for this analysis is the one spoken in
Palamu District in Jharkhand. This analysis was done on a corpus of 1331 words.
