Re: the Islambouli Brigades

[edit]

Isn't the jihad commando "Islambouli Brigades" named in his honour? This could be mentioned in the articles. 195.70.32.136 08:56, 30 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Not sure what you mean by a "jihad commando" but yes this has been added to the article now. --A51Abductee 00:16, 19 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

What happened to the picture of Islambouli on this page?

[edit]

It is debatable whether the subject of this article is a martyr. Also Chechen groups fighting Russia cannot possibly be dignified with the title "resistance movements" after Beslan. I cleaned up the piece on this person. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 193.194.63.129 (talk) 19:52, 6 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Misc

[edit]

The business about the street name in Iran is peripheral. The bit about the Russian airliners boils down to nothing but an anonymous claim on a pro-terrorism web forum. (Jamestown often overestimates the importance of such stuff.) The Russian Wahhabi Shamil Basayev claimed it was done by a group of his people, with a completely different name; see

Birthdate?

[edit]

His date of birth isn't listed.-DMCer 23:20, 1 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I looked for it, found it, and wrote it in the article. I like him a much. He was a real martyr. I hope he will come back thousandly in the heaven which he gave up in this world. 89.132.93.69 04:43, 2 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Motive for assassination of Sadat

[edit]

The article states that el-Islambouli said he killed the late President because the latter signed a peace treaty with Israel, but does not cite any source for this information. In Autumn of Fury: the Assassination of Sadat (Random House, 1983) Mohamed Heikal describes el-Islambouli's behavior at the trial but does not mention any statement about Sadat and the peace treaty. He does mention that el-Islambouli's brother was among three thousand Egyptians arrested by Sadat on September 3, 1981, one month before the assassination and two days before el-Islambouli was asked to take part in the military parade in which the killing would take place. Heikal also mentions that several family members of other conspirators were also arrested in the same crackdown.

Heikal, as Egypt's foremost journalist during the presidency of Gamel AbdelNasser (Sadat's predecessor), is certainly an authoritative source. While Sadat's foreign policy was bitterly opposed by el-Islambouli and his fanatic co-conspirators, they had many other grievances against the late President. Incidentally, it is worth mentioning that Heikal, and a number of prominent Coptic Christian leaders, were among those arrested on September 3. Heikal suggests that the assassins hoped to spark an uprising, and the national sense of crisis in the wake of the arrests might have encouraged that hope. And of course the arrests of their family members would have enraged the conspirators. In the absence of documentation for the quote attributed to el-Islambouli, the arrests of September 3, rather than the peace treaty with Israel, appear as the event that most immediately precipitated Sadat's killing. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Halfegyptian (talkcontribs) 04:10, 3 April 2011 (UTC) Halfegyptian (talk) 04:22, 3 April 2011 (UTC)Fareed Aboul-ela[reply]
