I'm surprised to see an article this short has been waiting so long for a review. I'll get that fixed shortly. Thebiguglyalien (talk) 20:51, 1 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Tails Wx I've posted the review below. My main concerns are that there are significant gaps in the coverage here and the way sources are used might be a little misleading at some points; both of these also introduce NPOV issues in a few places. It's likely going to require a really thorough examination of the sources to address this. I'll leave it to you whether you're looking to do this in the next week or if you'd rather close the review so you can take your time without feeling rushed. Hi @Thebiguglyalien, thanks for the review! Yeah, I'm thinking the best way forward from here is to close the review for now for me to address those issued you've noted below. I don't think I can address those in a week or so because I've been busy recently; it isn't going to get any better in the next week or so in terms of that. Also, if I were to have time to do so, it'll probably take a substantial amount of it to get to all of those, and it's probably better to gradually improve it rather than rush through and risk making additional mistakes from it. ~ Tails Wx 04:04, 2 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

General:

  • I'm not a fan of starting sentences with "However"; it's an extra word that doesn't change the meaning. A few other transition words might be removable as well without meaningfully interrupting the flow.
  • There's not enough room for these images. One or both of the thumbnails should probably be removed.

Lead:

  • until his departure in January 2018 after crime rates increased significantly – It could be clearer that he was removed, and it was specifically because of the crime rates.
  • Three years later, in 2021 – A little redundant.

Early life:

  • Can we get years for his graduations and degrees?

Police career:

  • Not a major issue, but I don't like that each paragraph starts with "on date" or "in year". It's not technically WP:PROSELINE, but it feels like it.
  • This section is rather long. Fairfax County can probably be its own section or subsection.
  • Any reason this isn't simply titled "Career"?
  • Do we know why he resigned in 2014?
  • Do we know why she replaced Batts with Davis?
  • replaced Batts with Davis as the interim commissioner and with Davis having acted as the commissioner seem redundant to one another.
  • Why the protests? That seems to come out of nowhere and needs context.
  • Was he unemployed 2018–2021?
  • after concerns over his law enforcement history – Do we know the specifics? Is it just his termination in Baltimore, or are there other things?
  • although certain types of crime, including domestic violence and motor vehicle theft, rose during Davis' tenure – Unlike the homicides in Baltimore, this doesn't seem directly relevant and gives the impression that it was cherrypicked to say something negative.
  • I'd avoid describing things as "controversies" and instead just describing what happened. Even then, two instances probably doesn't warrant "several".
  • I find the Sledzaus' role in this and his reason for resigning unclear.
  • Who was responsible for the non-English certificates? Davis or DeBoard? The passive voice makes it hard to tell.
  • The Fairfax portion seems very critical. I'm not going to ask for a WP:FALSEBALANCE, but if there is any more coverage about things other than controversies 2021–present, it should really be added.

Personal life:

  • No concerns.

Spot checks:

  • [3] Thompson (2013):
  • Does this support anything in the first sentence of "Police career"? It looks like [5] CBS Baltimore (2015) is carrying everything there.
  • This source lists a lot of roles he held 1992–2009, which the article has no information on. Right now, the article gives the impression that he was a patrol officer for 17 years and then immediately promoted to police chief.
  • This source says he spent his final years at Prince George as the assistant chief of police.
  • No mention that it was his decision to have a Twitter account for the department as a transparency measure?
  • [12] Campbell & Rector (2015) and [13] CBS Baltimore (2015): Good, although these do elaborate on the reasons for the protests, which should be in the article.
  • [14] Linderman (2016): This source doesn't say there were 300 homicides in 2016, simply that they reached that number in December 2016. We don't know how many more there were in those last weeks, but the total number was highly likely to be a little over 300.
  • [19] Andersen (2018): He said the honor of his lifetime, which makes a difference.
  • [22] Taube (2021): The lawsuits seem relevant and would help with a few of the points above. The body cameras and deescalation policy also seem relevant, especially since the article seems lopsided toward negative coverage.
  • [23] Massimo (2022): The "despite this" implies that this source gives some sort of resolution to the Democratic Committee issue. The source connects the domestic violence issue to an effort to encourage reporting, so it's not fair to cast this wholly in a negative light (though as I said above, it probably doesn't need to be included at all).
