- Not very interesting to a non-American who doesn't know what playoffs are, BeanieFan11. Are any other hooks possible? ~~ AirshipJungleman29 (talk) 01:11, 5 February 2024 (UTC)
- Busy now. Requesting @Gonzo fan2007:, who came up with the hook, to take over. BeanieFan11 (talk) 01:13, 5 February 2024 (UTC)
- AirshipJungleman29, 90% of DYK hooks are not interesting to me initially because I don't know what they are about... until I click on them. "Playoffs" is linked and is a well-known English word that means, even in British English (see for example English Football League play-offs). It is quite unique and interesting that a player's only game was a playoff game. Over 100 million people will watch the Super Bowl this coming weekend. It is interesting to broad audience. « Gonzo fan2007 (talk) @ 14:34, 5 February 2024 (UTC)
- Are you really saying that you don't know what 90% of Wikipedia:Recent additions is about?
- As I understand it Gonzo_fan2007, the American "playoff" concept is substantially different from the rest of the world's, as it refers to determining the winners (?) of a division. Personally, I think that not being able to understand the words of the hook is much worse than simply not understanding the intracacies of the context...but I may be wrong. So I won't be promoting this hook, and another promoter can decide. ~~ AirshipJungleman29 (talk) 14:50, 5 February 2024 (UTC)
- Nope, not what I said. I said that I don't know what makes most hooks interesting until I engage with the article. The first DYK hook today is
...that Phomen Singh (pictured), an early Indian migrant to New Zealand, sold sweets and chutneys out of a suitcase?"
Why is this interesting in the least bit? Millions of people have sold trinkets out of their suitcase. I could argue that outside of New Zealand/India, this hook isn't interesting at all. But then, I clicked on the article and realized he was one of the first immigrants to New Zealand and started a successful business. The hook is meant to draw you in. Playoffs is linked in the hook and the article is clearly interesting to a broad audience. Playoffs isn't any different, its a single elimination game played at the end of the season or competition. That's the Cambridge Dictionary definition of the word. And the football (soccer) article I linked above is almost the exact type of playoff system. Semi-finals lead to a final and a champion. It would be like a 2nd tier soccer player not playing his whole first year and then making his only appearance in the most important game of the year for the team. « Gonzo fan2007 (talk) @ 15:38, 5 February 2024 (UTC)

- ALT1: ... that Keshawn Banks' only NFL appearance during his rookie year came in a single-elimination game? - if there really is concern that "playoffs" if too "US-centric", I guess this could work. Also povide clarification he is a rookie, maybe to provide more interest. I don't agree with that concern, but trying to find some compromise. As any fan of sport can attest, it is trul interesting that a rookie's first and only game came in the most important game of the year. « Gonzo fan2007 (talk) @ 18:55, 6 February 2024 (UTC)
