Not Done Yet

Why no mention of his son-father back-to-back homers? That was one of the more noteworthy things I've ever seen.

He's aging, but not finished yet. Check his numbers for 2005 compared to the prior few years. With the use of steroids by his peers, he'll be in the spotlight again as the real deal.

Hagiography?

I like Junior and think he has earned his accolades. Nonetheless much of the tone of this article feels a bit too informal ("Griff"?). Well, I used different names because using the same terms again and again becomes a bit redundant and sounds as though one has a limited vocabulary. And I don't think this is a hagiography by any means. No more than any other athlete's Wiki entry is. If it's a bit informal, well, it's only because this is Wikipedia and I thought there was a bit of leeway on tone. Defense

I know Griffey's always been considered a god in center field, but the statement "his defense in center field breeched no rivals during that decade" has been shown to be false. Research has been done (I'll provide the link in a second) that shows that Griffey wasn't the best center fielder of the decade, at least in the American League. Devon White has a very good argument, and is at least a rival.

I'd agree that the statement is a bit over the top, however during the 90's Griffey won a gold glove in CF EVERY year (10 of them) while Devon White (playing the same position) won only 5 during the same time frame. The comparison of White vs Griffey is not a good one. Griffey was hands down much better.

"Griffey" redirect

Griffey redirects to junior's page, without a mention of senior. Either "Griffey" should be a disambiguation page with links to the two, or junior's page should have a "This article is about the son, for the father, see...." notation at the very top.

Jersey Number

I have had to change his jersey number to 3 two different times. It was listed as 30 which it was in the past. But in the 2006 season he changed it over to number 3 to represent his three children. Even though the picture shows him wearing the number 30. He hasn't wore that number since the 2005 season. It even states in the wiki article not by me that he changed his number before the 2006 season to 3.

POV and references

This article strikes me as a little too adulatory of Griffey. That's not to say he's not a good baseball player or whatever, but the article really needs a more neutral tone. In addition, some of the more over-the-top statements need references if they're going to stand (the whole thing needs references, really). For example:

While with the Mariners, Griffey established himself as baseball's premier player. During the 1990s, Griffey was considered one of the best players of all time. Before injuries cut into his production, he was a top run producer and the best center fielder in the big leagues.

Youth and early career

I edited the "baseball's premier player" reference to "one of the most prolific and exciting players of the era", citing selected stats from '89 to '90. I came to these totals by visiting Junior's page on baseball reference dot com. Anyone is welcome to double-check the math. I hope this edit tips the scale back in favor of neutrality. While Griffey is one of my favorite players, there is no evidence to support ANYTHING such as "premier player". Benjammin2u (talk) 06:54, 4 April 2008 (UTC)

Tenure

i cleaned up this article a lot.. some really poor grammar, clearly biased statements, and unnecessary filler was taken out.. i also added a personal section with something that was totally out of place, and added his record breaking 1702nd RBI. i'm not sure if it's 1703 or 1702, because on the espn article it says 1702, but reggie jackson hit 1702, so it might actually be 1703.. i'm not sure... can someone confirm this for certain? Picture

I think it's pretty clear that history will remember Griffey as a Mariner. He will probably end his career in Seattle, and will almost certainly enter the Hall of Fame as a Mariner. Wouldn't it be appropriate for his Wikipedia picture to follow suit? Don't change it yet. He still plays for the Reds. After his career is over and he enters the hall as a Mariner, then the picture should change appropriately. However, as he's still a Red, the picture should remain. RiSK (talk) 01:10, 10 June 2008 (UTC)

Please stop changing his # to 17. The team originally announced that he would wear #17. However, they later announced that Nick Swisher would change to #1 and Griffey was taking #30. Considering it was just uploaded, I found it here after about five seconds, and I generally doubt that anyone has pictures from more than ten years ago that they're waiting to upload at a moment's notice.
