It looks like Benoit-Bird has received a few academic/research-based awards, but does that qualify her to be someone notable? Several businesspeople, members of the military, activists, educators, and others receive several awards from organizations (academic, political, social, civic, economic, entrepreneurial, etc.) but do those alone qualify someone to have an encyclopedia article dedicated to that person? If we can identify specifically what Benoit-Bird has done that is notable or encyclopedic, I welcome that. However, winning awards does not mark someone as notable and nor does being a researcher. If she were given awards due to specific accomplishments/discoveries, then obviously that would mark her as notable, but those aren't mentioned here. Lots of researchers and academics publish research documents, but those alone do not mark them as notable. PerpetuityGrat (talk) 23:32, 19 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I added details about Benoit-Bird's research, including information in the published scientific literature and information about work with beaked whales that frequent a Navy test range. The awards she has received are quite notable, and include a MacArthur genius award. Benoit-Bird's research relies on acoustic measurements and the Acoustical Society of America has acknowledged her work twice (with the Medwin Prize and the R. Bruce Lindsay Award), and she is a fellow of the society. I hope this meets the notability requirements of Wikipedia. HillHouseUSA (talk) 14:39, 26 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I have become more familiar with establishing notability of academics WP:PROF and Benoit-Bird meets multiple criteria. In 2010, she received a MacArthur Fellowship, thereby meeting criteria #2 (person has received a highly prestigious academic award or honor at a national or international level). In 2017, she was named a fellow of the Acoustical Society of America, thereby meeting criteria #3 (Fellow of a major scholarly society for which that is a highly selective honor). Given this, I will remove the flag questioning her notability. Finally, as I do not have a connection to Benoit-Bird, I will remove the flag about that as well.DaffodilOcean (talk) 14:12, 18 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
