National Post
[edit]Subsequent to Prof. Wu coming on #wikipedia-en-help, I examined the cited National Post article, and it does indeed have, if not a retraction, an explanation of why its statements are perhaps less than valid. As well, a followup article (by the same author) has been published, which casts doubt on the first.
I suggest that, rather than accepting the NP's content uncritically and repeating those statements in Wikipedia's voice, we carefully attribute the statements, and include the followup.
Specifically, I suggest that the paragraph citing the NP be replaced with the following:
"In 2020, the National Post published an article stating that Prof. Wu is also a researcher at several universities in China, with at least one position being full-time; the Post also noted that he had in 2011 been a delegate to the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, and an advisor to the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the Chinese Communist Party's United Front Work Department. Wu subsequently objected to this description, calling it "absolute nonsense", and saying that the Post had misinterpreted articles in Chinese publications and taken exaggerations at face value. The Post added an editorial commment to the article explaining Wu's objections, and published a follow-up in which he noted that his former students would often add his name to projects so that they could use his prestige to achieve funding; as well, Wu stated that his role in the Political Consultative Conference had been "purely as an observer".
Any objections? DS (talk) 03:05, 23 April 2021 (UTC)
