Nationality of Kayla Jean Carter

[edit]

@Sciencefish Why have you limited Kayla Jean Carter's nationality to only as 'American'? She is a dual citizenship as the national pageant requires that she be a citizen of the Philippines. Furthermore, she is a representative of the Philippines and gained notability in the Philippines so why do you not recognise her as a Filipino?

Per you citing rules under MOS:ETHNICITY, the rules dictate that under the nationality section; "In cases of public or relevant dual citizenship, or a career that spans a subject's emigration, the use of the word and reduces ambiguity. "Furthermore should we not follow the precedent of this rule under the 'Peter Lorre' example where "an example of a person who established a career in Europe as a Hungarian, then emigrated to the United States and was naturalized and continued his career, and is thus known as both a Hungarian actor and as an American actor. The use of and again prevents the introduction of ethnicity or birth."

To further add, under the 'context' section, it clearly dictates that "the opening paragraph should usually provide context for that which made the person notable. In most modern-day cases, this will be the country, region, or territory where the person is currently a national or permanent resident; or, if the person is notable mainly for past events, where the person was such when they became notable." Carter gained notability when she competed in the Miss Universe Philippines 2024 pageant and was appointed as Miss Charm Philippines where these events occurred IN THE PHILIPPINES.

As a precedent, Catriona Gray in her opening paragraph is described as "a Filipino beauty pageant titleholder and media personality..." although she was born in Australia and had Australian citizenship. Should there not be consistency within these pages about beauty queens, especially dual citizens?

I have not yet edited this back as I am decent enough to first address this with you however am requesting you do so under these rules. NathalieMendoza (talk) 18:01, 28 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

As long as the usual requirements are met - a good source covering her citizenship and dual nationality for each country, then change it yourself. Don't forget to add the relevant sources to the body, so the lead and infobox are accurate. It's nothing to do with my not recognising her dual nationality, and everything to do with the sources. Note also that some countries don't recognise dual nationality, and that nationality and citizenship maybe different. Most pageant content comes from tabloid style websites with poor sourcing and gossipy information, and don't usually pay attention to the fine print. If you don't like inconsistency then fix them and add the citations. Remember this is an encyclopaedia and WP:NOTATABLOID. I look forward to your additions and references.
