Expansion
[edit]So I've uploaded a first stab at an article [1]; but it could probably use some expansion and straightening out. The article on Paddington Bear might be a good model. In particular I don't seem to have done a very good job of communicating just what it is that has made the Katie Morag books so appealing and so attractive to children for 25 years now.
Anything along those lines needs to be properly sourced rather than original research, but some additional sources that may help:
- An appreciation of the books from the Oxford Encyclopedia of Children's Literature, 2006, via answers.com
- Article on Mairi Hedderwick, in Anita Silvey (ed.), Children's books and their creators, 1995.
- Review from the New York Times, 15 February 1987
- (Katie Morag and the Two Grandmothers and Katie Morag and the Tiresome Ted)
- Review from The Herald (Glasgow), 22 July 1996
- (The Big Katie Morag Story Book)
- Books for Keeps, May 1986. "... I like the spirit of an author-artist who creates a Grannie who wants a spare part for her tractor!"
- (Katie Morag Delivers the Mail)
- + also other reviews from Books for Keeps
- Penni Cotton (2000), Picture Books Sans Frontières, pp. 78–80, also p. 114 (not available) (TES description)
- (Katie Morag and the New Pier)
- Shirley Hughes commends Katie Morag as a rare example of a convincingly real child character (Guardian, 2 March 2010); also here (Guardian, 3 October 2006)
- 2004 article in Gale Research's Something about the Author, has an assessment of the series referencing several more reviews. (linked from Mairi Hedderwick article refs).
More snippets:
- Paragraph on the books by Maureen A. Farrell, writing on "The Lost Boys and Girls of Scottish Childrens Fiction" in Murray Pittock (ed.), Modern transformations, new identities from 1918, p. 206. Edinburgh University Press, 2006.
Unfortunately most other reviews from what WP would consider reliable sources seem mostly just to be two or three line recommendations in the course of a busy newspaper articles; but if people find some more extensive ones, it would be good to have a note of them. DYK text
[edit]Looks like I chose the wrong "hook" text for DYK (only 1600 page views; and only 757 for Mairi Hedderwick – a good DYK should get anything of the order of 4000) - cf DYK Archive.
Probably should have gone for something like
- "... that the Katie Morag stories by Mairi Hedderwick are in part inspired by her life on the Isle of Coll in the Inner Hebrides ?",
more open, and giving less away up-front; and perhaps Scottish islands are a more seductive association. Also it would have been closer to the spine of both articles, so maybe fairer. Oh well, live and learn. Jheald (talk) 12:01, 24 January 2011 (UTC)
