Middle name
The middle name "Genevieve" was added on September 18, 2017 without providing a reliable source to support the edit. I added a citation needed template for it. Since then I've searched the web to verify the actuality of the name but have been unable to find any source that confirms it. Facts about living persons must be accurate and proven.
If no reliable, published source is provided by September 30, I will delete the middle name (if another editor does not do so first). Pyxis Solitary talk 08:02, 26 September 2017 (UTC)
- Per above comment, it has been deleted. Pyxis Solitary talk 10:18, 30 September 2017 (UTC)
Date of birth
The DOB in the infobox was unsourced. Biographical content about living persons must be supported with reliable sources. The DOB is not included in Barrell's official website. Nor is it found in any of the article's current citations and further reading sources. The web search I conducted for a reliable, published source returned (1) mirrors and forks of this Katherine Barrell article, (2) user-generated websites, and (3) fan sites. None of it is acceptable in Wikipedia.
Per Biographies of living persons, I removed the year of birth; however, the month and day is supported with an Instagram post by Katherine Barrell: Katherine Barrell [@katbarrell] (February 13, 2015). "I had the most WONDERFUL birthday yesterday!". Instagram. Because of this message from Barrell, herself, "February 12" remains in the infobox. Pyxis Solitary talk 12:29, 1 October 2017 (UTC)
- In the province of Ontario children attend secondary school starting age 14 and graduate at 18. The math: graduated from secondary school at age 18. Attended college for the next 4 years. Graduated from college in 2010. She was 22 yrs old (18 + 4 yrs). 22 yrs old in 2010+7 years (2017) makes her 29 yrs old today. 2A00:1DC0:CAFF:33:0:0:0:423B (talk) 09:58, 2 October 2017 (UTC)
- I've had a lingering thought about the 2010 graduation year, but you connected dots. Well done. For her to have graduated in 2010 at 22 makes her birth year 1988. But ... we still need a reliable source to support the addition of a birth year. Pyxis Solitary talk 12:43, 2 October 2017 (UTC)
- I read a comment elsewhere about George Brown College's theater arts degree being a 3 year program and checked its web page. I'm revising my estimate of her birth year to 1989. Pyxis Solitary talk 05:09, 4 October 2017 (UTC)
All Wikipedia editors need to abide by this important privacy instruction:
- "Wikipedia includes full names and dates of birth that have been widely published by reliable sources, or by sources linked to the subject such that it may reasonably be inferred that the subject does not object."
Everyone should read the privacy policy. Pyxis Solitary talk 11:50, 3 October 2017 (UTC)
One more time:
I don't want to beat a dead horse, but now and then an editor (who probably hasn't read this Talk page) adds a DOB to the infobox, and the source they base their edit on turns out to be a fan site.
Biographies of living persons (aka BLPs) are perhaps the most strictly regulated articles on Wikipedia. Besides being written with a neutral point of view and sans original research, material must be verifiable and based on high-quality sources. Content that is "unsourced or poorly sourced" must be "removed immediately and without waiting for discussion". In Wikipedia, you can't just add content, you must also prove that what you've added is legitimate. (Also, Barrell may be an actor but when it involves BLPs, IMDb is not an acceptable source of information.)
Fan sites are not reliable sources. They do not have editorial oversight. Anything published in a fan site cannot be "used to cite facts in an article". If you're not sure if a website is a fan site or not, read its "About Us" page -- it should provide the who, what, when, where, and why of its existence; and if it doesn't have one ... pass it up. Thank you! fellow editors. Pyxis Solitary 10:33, 11 July 2018 (UTC)
