Suicide terminology
[edit]Hi No such user. I refer to your unexplained reversion here: [1] I made this change after reading MOS:SUICIDE. To be fair, that guideline does indeed clarify the term "committed suicide" is not banned, though it also notes the term has been contentious and offers many non-contentious alternatives. See suicide terminology or this external article if you'd like to know why the term is contested: [2]. Accordingly, is there any chance you'd be opening to using one of the uncontested terms in lieu of "committed"? Damien Linnane (talk) 07:58, 23 May 2023 (UTC)
- Yeah, having "killed himself by jumping to his death" is redundant. Since you tried to sneak your edit (along with 300 similar ones) under the "copyedit" label, I'd have expected that you paid more attention. I much prefer the original wording. No such user (talk) 08:23, 23 May 2023 (UTC)
- I don't see how that's any less redundant than "committed suicide by jumping to his death"; both phrases effectively say he died twice, so I'll change that. Do have a read of WP:AGF though. It is a copy-edit, as far as I'm concerned. And at least I can say I provided some form of edit summary, which is more than you can say. Damien Linnane (talk) 08:31, 23 May 2023 (UTC)
- We had a long discussion whose result did not agree with certain opinions banning the use of "commit". Systematically replacing one acceptable expression with another does not fall under the general "copyedit" label, and you should have used a more precise edit summary, hence I think "sneak" is an apt description. Your apparent good faith is not a license to change 300 articles at once, and I'll wait out the result of ANI discussion which would likely result in rolling them all back. - Yes, as I clarified in my first post here, I am well aware the term is not banned. As both myself and others at the ANI have stated, however, the current wording of MOS:SUICIDE appears to encourage the change. I'm happy to agree to disagree if you are though. Have a nice day.
