Question
[edit]- What makes Schnabel an Austrian pianist? As far as I can see, he was born in Germany to Jewish-Polish parents, studied there and started his musical career in Germany. He never lived in Austria, nor studied there, so he should be in the categories of German-Jewish pianists. - His mother, Therese Behr, was not Polish but German born and raised. His father immigrated from Poland to Vienna at the age of seven and became an Austrian citizen as a child. Although Schnabel was born in Germany, he inherited his father's Austrian citizenship when he was born which he held until he became a citizen of the United States. He was never legally a citizen of Germany.Nrswanson (talk) 19:09, 26 February 2009 (UTC)
- Even today, there are millions of people born in Germany who do not automatically have German nationality, while many people NOT born in Germany do, because they inherit it ethnically. (Some would say, racially.)
- Furthermore, Artur Schnabel, Karl-Ulrich's father, was not born in "Poland". There was no "Poland" until 1918, when Artur Schnabel was 36 years old. He was born in the Austrian province of Galizia, a German-speaking subject of the Emperor of Austria, and retained that nationality after 1918. 208.87.248.162 (talk) 15:47, 14 September 2013 (UTC)
