Notability of online Karel in NCLab
[edit]As I described here, I think that the NCLab section has too much detail for a variant of the Karel language, and I am removing much of that content. I invite any interested parties, including User:PavelSolin to discuss it here. Dead Horsey (talk) 03:43, 9 February 2012 (UTC)
Hello, of course I cannot prevent you from erasing much of the material that I posted, but I am sorry because this means that fewer kids will find it. Karel is a free gift from the NCLab team to kids. Compare it to other existing versions to see how much time and effort we put into it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by PavelSolin (talk • contribs) 04:23, 9 February 2012 (UTC)
- Pavel, I don't think it has anything to do with the quality of NCLab, or how much time you put into it. I think it's wonderful to have many tools to choose from, especially when those tools are free. I'm not trying to remove all mention of NCLab, but put it into proper context.
- NCLab is based on Karel. Therefore, in the Karel article, it does not deserve more text than Karel itself. That's like saying that in the Unix article, Linux should be mentioned very prominently, getting more than half of the article space. It doesn't; Linux has its own article, as it should. NCLab should be mentioned on this page, but it should not dominate the article. If NCLab becomes very popular, it could even have its own article. I really think you're putting too much detail about NCLab in the article. The link to the tutorial seems good; you can put a lot of extra detail on the Google doc that would be out-of-place in this article.
- I'm going to trim back the example syntax, but leave everything else as you have it. Thank you for your contributions both to Wikipedia and to NCLab (I assume that you are a contributor), and please continue to contribute. Dead Horsey (talk) 03:33, 11 February 2012 (UTC)
I removed the image of "Niki the Robot" because it was irrelevant. Niki was not even mentioned anywhere else on the page. PavelSolin (talk) 18:02, 10 February 2012 (UTC)
Why is Karel in Wikiproject Robotics?
[edit]For some reason, Karel the Robot is being associated with Robotics although it has nothing to do with it. If Pattis called the language "Karel the Ant", there would be nothing relating Karel to Robots in any way. PavelSolin (talk) 18:09, 10 February 2012 (UTC)
- I cannot understand your reasoning. The article says "control a simple robot", indeed its successor is described as "The robot may be controlled" - how is this not related to a robot - and so robotics?
- The point is that the author chose to use a robot and descriptions include robot. If there is any genuine lack of robot references then perhaps the robotics project tag can be removed. As it stands now, there are references to robot, albeit a virtual one, so it will remain for now, as it has done for just over four years. Chaosdruid (talk) 14:03, 16 February 2012 (UTC)
- Agree with initial comment. The same reason why the tag "Reptiles" is not associated with the LOGO article, even although the language's goal is to control a turtle (albeit a virtual one.) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 148.87.19.198 (talk) 01:08, 26 July 2012 (UTC)
