Karakoçan is a Kurdish town. It has been assimilated by Turkish state forces during the Republic of Turkey era.Karakocan have provided many guerilla for PKK and any other Kurdistan National Movements. Its political desire is under the influence of AKP (rulling party of Turkey as 2011) and AKP is the dominant party with Pro-Kurdish Party BDP(peace and democracy party). Karakocan's demographic status is getting changed by the state's heavy policies. It's viliages have been emptied by the state forces. According to inhabbitants Karakocan's current mayor Nurettin Arslan was in relationship with an illegal terroist organisation named as Ergenekon.

Karakocan is one of the unique towns of Kurdistan. It's original name is DEP.
