Requested move 2008

As a place name the article should be called Kalam Valley rather than the current title of Kalam valley, just like say Fergana Valley or Aosta Valley. Pahari Sahib 13:19, 24 July 2008 (UTC)
- Just to note, this has now been done Pahari Sahib 17:57, 24 July 2008 (UTC)
Not the same Bahrain
[edit]Someone has hot linked Bahrain the neighboring village, to Bahrain the emirate in Arabian Gulf. This can cause great misunderstanding to someone who would click this hot link Hassanfarooqi (talk) 19:36, 13 August 2010 (UTC)

Kalam Valley → Kalam, Swat Valley – Reason: Kalam is a village in Swat Valley, it is not a separate valley — Preceding unsigned comment added by Adnanrail (talk • contribs) 15:04, 23 September 2012 (UTC)
- comment – It seems to me that Swat, Pakistan (Swat District) is administrative district #22 in Districts of Pakistan#Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa), and an administrative district in Pakistan is roughly analogous to what is called a county in many other countries. I also see that in file:Swat NWFP.svg, Saidu Sharif and Kalam are apparently the two most significant human settlements in Swat. And the WP:primary topic for Kalam is Ilm al-Kalam, so Kalam needs to be disambiguated. I also see from the panoramic picture of the capital city Saidu Sharif that with high mountains, Swat is a place of great natural beauty ("the Switzerland of the region")—the administrative district is not entirely contained within a valley. Although perhaps, I don't know—there is a valley called the "Swat Valley" which is contained within (a subset of) the administrative district. Likewise, perhaps there is a "Kalam Valley" contained within Swat District. I suppose that the Swat River defines the valley, in other words, the Swat Valley is an area along the banks of the river. It seems that there is no Kalam River, and that the "Kalam Valley" is just what the valley that the Swat River flows through is called in the vicinity of Kalam. Oh, I see—it is a "three-rivers" area, so rather than name it after a single river, it's named after the village located (near?) where the three rivers meet. Now there are two broad classes of articles, those in Category:Valleys of Pakistan, which is a subset of Category:Landforms of Pakistan, and those in Category:Populated places in Swat District, a subset of Category:Populated places in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The first category being geographic in nature, while the second is based on administrative divisions. The way the article was written (until recently) it seems to be more geographical in nature. None of the pictures show any human settlements, so it seems to cover an area broader than the more limited area an article on Kalam village would cover. Thus, the current article is appropriately in Category:Valleys of Pakistan. If it is rewritten to focus more on the actual village rather than just on the valley, maybe showing a picture of the village, then the article should be added to Category:Populated places in Swat District, and renamed Kalam, Swat, consistent with Charbagh, Swat, Hazara, Swat and Matta, Swat. – Wbm1058 (talk) 16:00, 24 September 2012 (UTC)
- see Wikipedia:Naming conventions (geographic names), and specifically Wikipedia:Naming conventions (geographic names)#Disambiguation, which supports Kalam, Swat. Wbm1058 (talk) 18:32, 24 September 2012 (UTC)
- comment – Swat valley is extended from Mingora to Kalam and Swat River flows through the length of the valley. There is no Kalam river. Please check the photographs of this article, The contributors used "Kalam, Swat Valley" and "Kalam" for caption and file name. I don't have any objection to rename this article to Kalam, Swat. - Support a move to Kalam, Swat as this is the most precise and simplest disambiguation. Contrary to appearances if you look on Google maps and zoom in a bit, there is in fact a settlement with a large number of buildings including a motel, a hotel, a school and three maternity homes. This settlement appears to be called Kalam. There does not appear to be a river called Kalam, but it is plausible. Green Giant (talk) 15:09, 1 October 2012 (UTC)
- Support a move to Kalam, Swat. I did not doubt that there is a settlement named Kalam, and my understanding is that there is not a settlement named "Kalam Valley." However, the term Kalam valley (valley should be spelled in lower case to make clear that a natural area is being described, and not a town) is widely used to describe the beautiful landscape surrounding the town. And it seems the primary reason people stay in one of the town's hotels is not to visit the town, but rather to explore the natural areas surrounding it. And I also am convinced that there is no Kalam River, but that "Kalam valley" describes the upper reaches of the Swat River, to the point where two other rivers join to form the Swat (Kalam is adjacent to this point of confluence). All of this should be explained clearly in the article. A roughly analogous example is Keene and Keene Valley, New York. These are separate settlements (hamlets), about four miles apart, but they are in the Ausable River valley, there is no Keene River. Wbm1058 (talk) 19:13, 1 October 2012 (UTC)
- Just a note that upon further consideration it does seem that capitalizing specific valley names (as proper names) is accepted convention on Wikipedia, so I believe it's good to name the valley "Kalam Valley," but it should be made clear that that is the name of a valley, and not the name of a settlement, and that the name of that particular valley is derived from the nearby settlement with that name, rather than a river with that name, and that "Kalam Valley" is roughly equivalent to "upper Swat Valley" - it may include the lower valleys of the two rivers that join to form the Swat as well.
