HUD is a housing agency which is part of FHA, and insurance for mortgage lenders who wish to provide low income housing to homebuyers who may not qualify for conforming lenders. They insure the loan with a mortgage insurance premium. The loan amounts are not more than $417,000 which is similar to Fannie Mae (sometimes they can be lower, but have never exceeded Fannie Mae loan size limits.
Please find additional sources of Jumbo loan information. HUD is a conforming loan agency.
Another example is Respa laws which are primarily in place to assist consumers with loan amounts of under $300,000.00
This article is so not understandable and thus worthless. Obviously the smokescreen lenders put up regarding jumbo loans contributed to the subprime mortgage crisis. (my ip address really isn't relevant here

[edit]I wanted to know what a Jumbo Loan was (including why I would want one), so of course I came to Wikipedia. Imagine my surprise to find an article written in the typical, obscure language of the mortgage industry. I still have NO idea what a Jumbo Loan is! Can't someout out there who knows write a simple explanation? David spector (talk) 13:24, 28 September 2009 (UTC)
- I don't agree, I'm no financial expert but I could understand this. Which words or phrases are you having problems with? Markb (talk) 14:35, 28 September 2009 (UTC)
- Aside from the literal, "it's a big loan" outside of the limits for "safer" conforming loans, so it usually has a higher interest rate? Concur with Mark, the article seems fairly straightforward, but maybe there's something specific that is throwing you? Kuru talk 23:39, 28 September 2009 (UTC)
SIMPLE Any mortgage over $417,000 is a jumbo. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 204.16.22.105 (talk) 19:39, 18 February 2010 (UTC)
I disagree with this statement: "SIMPLE Any mortgage over $417,000 is a jumbo." There are areas in the US defined as "high cost," which means that their mortgage limits are higher than $417,000. For example, Bronx County in New York is considered a "high cost" area, and has a conformed mortgage limit of $729,750. That means that any mortgage below the imposed ceiling of $729,750 would not be considered a jumbo in Bronx County (click on the PDF for high cost areas in the citation provided). [1] So no, not every mortgage over $417,000 would be considered a jumbo; it all depends on where you take out the mortgage. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.199.214.31 (talk) 15:39, 25 August 2011 (UTC)
