'Mere'

[edit]

He took orders and for some time was a mere usher, eventually becoming professor of rhetoric at the Collège des Quatre-Nations.

Why 'mere' ? Seems a gratuitous put-down to all the impoverished teachers who no doubt did their best.

... he published, with Fréron's brother-in-law, the abbé Thomas Royou (1741–1792), a journal, L'Ami du roi (1790–1792), which possibly did more harm than good to the king's cause by its ill-advised partisanship

Enormously typical and stereotyped suggestion of wretched old ginks who resent any writing or practice on a cause they personally oppose, who should prefer such advocates would just shut up. Claverhouse (talk) 08:42, 2 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
