Ufology claims
[edit]During a recent debate in Colombian Congress about the convenience of Oil extraction near natural parks as La Macarena, Tinigua and Picachos, the minister used as a scientific reference to rebuke the environmental arguments of a University Professor, Oscar Vanegas, the comparison between oil extraction impacts and human abduction by aliens[1]. In order to demonstrate that oil pollution of water is an uncommon phenomena, the Minister proposed to compare the number of google hints on human abductions (which are thousands, according to him) against oil impacts on water sources (which are just a few, according to him)[2]. Also, the minister accused the professor of being not just unscientific with his preposterous claims, but also of committing felonies such as creating economic misinformation.
An independent research has recently demonstrated that the Minister was wrong. Using the method sugested by the minister, a group of journalist found that there are higher numbers of google hints on oil effects on water sources than in human abductions by aliens[3]. The minister, after recognizing his statistical mistake, has offered public excuses to academic faculty members in the country, but not directly to the professor to whom he accused of the aforementioned felonies[4]. Oscar Vanegas did not accepted the apologies confirming that is now pursuing legal actions against the minister because of the accusations he was victim of[5].
