The Bernhardt family are unusual in baseball for being of East Indian descent. Though they come from the Dominican Republic and their ancestry is now mostly Latino their father's family history goes back to the migration of sugar workers there from the Eastern Caribbean and in their patrilineal line to a man named Mahatma Mohan who migrated from the area around Bombay to the Danish Virgin Islands as a contract laborer in the 1800s.
