John Larkins Cheese Richardson was not Josephine Rich's grandfather. Richardson married Charlotte Laing and had 2 daughters and 2 sons. One daughter, Eliza Laura married in New Zealand in 1848 Edwin Francis Rich, not William Gordon Rich. Crane has confused the 2 families.

Josephine was born in 1866 and christened the same year at Spaxton: Somerset Heritage Service; Taunton, Somerset, England; Reference Number: D\P\spax/2/1/9: Gives parents as William Gordon and Maria Stuart Rich. William Gordon Rich's obituary Press (NZ), July 8 1912 p3 gives: "In February 1856, Mr Rich married Miss Maitland, only daughter of Mr Joseph Maitland, of the Crescent and Hill End stations." Her mother was Maria Stuart (AKA Stuart) Maitland, and maternal grandparents were Joseph above and Ann Maria Pillans who were married at South Leith, Midlothian, in 1829. Stuart was christened there in 1833. Also the 1871 Census noted by Crane in her essay, gives her mother as "Maria S Rich, wife 37y b.Scotland": She has noted Josephine's brothers but ignored her mother.

Thank you for the clarification Sinebeg. I'm not sure the sources I immediately see in Wikitree are suitable for Wikipedia (birth registers etc are primary sources) but in the absence of a secondary source I'm sure there is a way to cover it satisfactorily. Possibly removing the incorrect information into a footnote with an explanation of why it is incorrect. I'll concoct something when I have time next week, unless you want to tackle it yourself sooner. DrThneed (talk) 06:27, 27 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
