[edit]I'm not so sure Joseph Matheny is notable, see WP:BIO. Is there "significant coverage in reliable secondary sources that are independent of the subject."? Authoring a book is not notable, nor is IMDB. User Setianson reverted my edit about notability without comment. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/Setiansonlooks indicates that Setianson may be a single use account, perhaps the subject himself or someone close to the subject. - Yes, I also think there might be some Conflict of Interest as the two IP addressess that are editing as well seem to only edit information around Matheny and Matheny's works. I would support a notability deletion. Maximilianklein (talk) 18:52, 10 November 2014 (UTC)
- Yes, I've been meaning to get back to this. I still support a notability deletion. In addition, my edits to the page were reverted without explanation User Setianson, which is suspect. This page appears to be a self-promotion page. What are the next steps? Cxbrx (talk) 01:44, 11 November 2014 (UTC)

- I really don't even know how to respond to all of this, other than to say a few things: I removed the deletion tag as the rules say to do after I added multiple references to both academic and mainstream media sources. Also, I am not Joseph Matheny, but rather a fan of his work and the level of paranoia implicit in the accusations is a bit disturbing. However, I really don't think it's paranoia per se, since as I suspected, I did a tiny bit of research and found that the user calling for this deletion has a conflict of interest. He is involved with an organization that has had a business dispute with Mr. Matheny in the past. Does that pass as "unbiased"? Can you please tell me what the policy is for editors trying to take down pages where there is a clear conflict of interest between the party whose page is being taken down and the editor trying to have it removed? Also the citations in question: 1. The Michael Kinsella Book- Kinsella,Michael. Legend-Tripping Online: Supernatural Folklore and the Search for Ong’s Hat University Press of Mississippi, 2011 That would be the ENTIRE text book about Matheny's work. Games magazine: McMahon, Chris (May 2013). "The Rise Of The ARG: games™ investigates alternate reality games and what the future has in store for the curious experiment.". Games TM 135: 88. as in the references.
- Responding by posting to the talk page is a good way to respond. Deleting the tag again is maybe not so good, but we are now having a discussion, so that is the main thing. There are two issues here. One is that this article has edits mostly by one author that indicates the possibility of self-promotion and/or lack of notability. The other is that my initial tag about notability was reverted without explanation. I'm happy to assume good faith here and move forward. The Kinsella book is a version of his Master Thesis (see http://www.wku.edu/folkstudies/successstories_michaelkinsella.php), so I'm not sure that is a significant enough resource. I work in a academia and my personal opinion is that the topic of a Master's Thesis does not make the topic notable. Perhaps there is a Wikipedia policy about this somewhere? I have not looked at the Games Magazine source yet, though I will do so soon. Again, thanks for response. Cxbrx (talk) 23:35, 13 November 2014 (UTC)
February 2015 proposal for deletion
[edit]This is the third time (by three different authors), that this page has been suggested for deletion in 9 months. Below are some data points:
- Setianson's contributions are mostly about this article or books written by the subject of this article. (deletion indicated (strong), this is probably WP:SPIP)
- The most recent proposal is by an editor that has only one edit. (deletion not indicated (weak))
- Kinsella's book is based on a Master's Thesis. I work in academia and getting a book published from a Master's thesis is not hard. (deletion indicated, Amazon rank is #3,701,112, which is low. I have book that has sold less than 1000 copies and it is #1,938,778. Yeah, Amazon rank is not a perfect, it does give us some information.)
- The McMahon/Games citation is not online and searching for that title brings up pages authored by Matheny at the top of the list. (deletion indicated (weak))
Upon reflection, I don't feel that Matheny is notable, see WP:AUTHOR. If he is, then I have a very long list of people who are far more notable.Cxbrx (talk) 06:37, 2 February 2015 (UTC)
