Canada and America
[edit]In 1912 he arrived by steamship s/s Victorian in Québec, Canada. In 1913 he lived for a few months in Bridgeport (America, Connecticut).
On 8 September 1914 he married Elizabeth Adele Grobbel (Elsie) in St. Matthias Church, Bellwoods Avenue, Toronto. Elsie was born in Rotterdam in 1883. Parents were Johann Joseph Francis Grobbel and Elisabeth Adele Buhlmann, both born in Germany. Father Francis was a wine merchant.
In 1901 they occur in a census in England. Elsie and her parents live in London then. Elsie is said to be a milliner and to be born in The Netherlands.
In December 1915 Joseph and Elsie crossed the border at Niagara/Buffalo to America on their way to Boston. To the customs Joseph declares ‘Seek work. Has a studio in Toronto but wishes to better himself. Has no idea yet.’ In 1921 Joseph and Elsie arrived by s/s Nieuw-Amsterdam in New York and travel further to Boston. In 1923 Joseph arrived in New York by R.M.S. Berengaria, departed from Southampton, destination Flushing (near New York), where he and Elsie lived then, at 40 Broadway. In 1926/27 he lived in Jersey City.
Their marriage ended in a divorce. What has become of Elsie, is unknown.

[edit]Netherlands On 10 May 1933 Joseph remarries in The Hague Josephine Catharine van Batenburg. They live in The Hague until Joseph dies on 30 November 1956. He was buried at the cemetery Nieuw Eykenduinen. The grave does not exist any more.
