Date of Birth

[edit]

According to the primary records Dutton was born in 1874, the General Register Office Index of Births has a birth of Joseph Everett Dutton of Wirral, Cheshire registered in the fourth-quarter of 1874. Also note

  • 1881 Census of Nantwich district has a Joseph E Dutton aged 6 living at Brookdale, Bunbury and described as a "Chemist Son" born Rock Ferry, Cheshire, parents listed as John and Sarah Dutton, his father described as a Chemist.
  • 1891 Census of Nantwich has a Joseph E Dutton aged 16 living at Brookdalem Bunbury and born Rock Ferry, Cheshire, parents listed as John and Sarah Ellen Dutton, father described as a Partially Retired Chemist.
  • 1901 Census of Birkenhead has a Jos E Dutton aged 26 living with this Brother Hugh at 502 New Chester Road and described as a Bachelor of Medicine born Rock Ferry.

A google search also shows the 1874 date supported by a number of sources as well as the ODNB, I would suggest that we use the 1874 date. MilborneOne (talk) 20:32, 8 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I am not comfortable with changing the date. The Joseph E Dutton primary sources may refer to a cousin, maybe Joseph Edward. Joseph Everett was more than a Bachelor of Medicine in 1901. I see Rock Ferry as part of Birkenhead, not Bebington. The Wellcome source notes the DNB date, but points out that the Liverpool School and the BMJ and Lancet obituaries give a later date. I have found errors in the DNB in the past, and trust the BMJ and Lancet more. Other sources may just be mirroring DNB. My instinct is to leave it for now. The footnote points out the uncertainty. Ignore the above. The dates in the DNB article fit together convincingly. The BMJ is only out by a few months on age at death, which was 30. I cannot find the Lancet obit, but DNB cites it. 1874 it is. I will add some more detail to the article. Aymatth2 (talk) 03:09, 9 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
