Invisible spending

"...notwithstanding his large income and the known simplicity of his lifestyle, he left a comparatively small fortune..."

Either 'notwithstanding' or 'small fortune' is misplaced here. If despite a large income and little spending he left a comparatively small amount then where did his money go?
