The 'auteur' thing.

[edit]

The re-ordering of the opening sentences doesn't really solve the problem. Being an auteur isn't about doing numerous different technical jobs. It's not a problematic claim so much as a nonsensical one. Regarding the other incorrect statement, the only noir director I can think of in whom a Sternberg influence can be traced is Hugo Haas, who is in any event a special case. --Chips Critic (talk) 08:39, 13 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

As ever, controversial claims should be supported by referenced material. Perhaps it would be best to strip the lede to very minimala at this point and rebuild using only referenced material. I agree that the film noir claim is spurious. The strong link to Dietrich is not really in dispute. It is also worth noting that the article does not currently explicitly state that he continued to work on in Germany under the Nazi dictatorship when many other directors did not--but also needs referenced. --Artiquities (talk) 11:59, 13 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I never disputed the Dietrich link, indeed I clarified it with a rewording. Your second claim is simply WRONG, totally inaccurate, with no basis in fact whatsoever. Sternberg wasn't in Germany for the Nazi era - he was home, in the United States, as his filmography makes clear. You're mistaking Sternberg for someone else, possibly Sirk, who was late leaving Nazi Germany - Sternberg was an Austrian-American, his only German production was The Blue Angel. --Chips Critic (talk) 20:25, 13 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
PS: The collaboration with Dietrich ended in 1935, and consists of seven films. You replaced accurate information with inaccurate information. Please don't do this again. --Chips Critic (talk) 20:29, 13 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Chips Critic for checking that, yes, actually, I think I must have been thinking of G. W. Pabst. Well, yes, of course, accurate detail replaced with general vagueness, cannot be encouraged.--Artiquities (talk) 21:02, 13 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

MOS (discussion moved from body of article)

[edit]

This MOS reference doesn't really make sense and I always thought it referred to Billy Wilder but I may be wrong about that. He moved to the US when he was two and was unlikely to have kept his 'thick Viennese accent'! - 82.27.203.34 (talk · contribs)

You're right, it certainly doesn't fit Sternberg. I've altered it accordingly, while rewriting for tone. This mostly involved cutting. --Chips Critic (talk) 10:17, 1 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Paramount's sister studio UFA

[edit]

Just no. There was a distribution deal called Parufamet, but of course the vast German UFA wasn't Paramount's "sister studio".2A02:AA1:102D:4FEB:B00E:3BF6:8A02:81C7 (talk) 21:48, 31 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

"official screen credit"

[edit]

Aren't screen credits "official" by definition? Are there "unofficial" screen credits? 2A02:AA1:1045:2BF9:4460:920F:6816:FF78 (talk) 14:34, 7 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
