" and a german sausage"

[edit]

Really wikipedia? Posting an old cheap joke like that on the frontpage? The source at least doesn't mention it. It's apparently in the article since forever, but it's still not really funny. 2A02:8109:A180:2B70:785B:D7EA:966E:991D (talk) 17:06, 15 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I assumed it was a joke too, but https://www.trivia-library.com/b/famous-lasts-the-last-execution-in-the-tower-of-london.htm seems to be a source for it, apparently predating the edit that introduced it here https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Josef_Jakobs&diff=284079679&oldid=275119595 Slogby (talk) 22:04, 7 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

With the fog of war, none probably can answer this.

¿Did the intelligence service offer to spare his life, if he would talk?

I understand the desire to kill all spies, but if one gives them a choice between good treatment if they talk, or death if they not, most sing like canaries. If one treats all spies like POWs or execute all spies, spies have no incentive to divulge useful intelligence, but if one offers a choice between good treatment or death, one can get good intelligence from them. Sticks and carrots work much better than all stick or all carrot. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2601:643:C002:2830:48DE:EA99:2C21:648 (talk) 22:56, 15 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

By their very nature, spies are not very valuable sources of information. In this case, he was parachuted in with little training. He was caught because he broke his ankle on landing. They had enough information on him as to his mission, but he had no useful information to give. So it was never a consideration to spare the life of a spy for information. So to paraphrase one newsreal of the time said, by the ancient rules of war, he had to die. That is what was done in that time period. 137.27.93.150 (talk) 23:57, 6 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Error

[edit]

This article is erroneous about why he was shot by a firing squad. The real reason is that he broke his ankle. He was dropped into England by parachute with little training and broke his ankle on landing. That is how he was caught. So the true reason that he was not hanged is because he couldn't stand on the trap door due to his injury. So he was strapped to a chair when he was shot by a firing squad. 137.27.93.150 (talk) 00:01, 7 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
