[edit]I saw one article that said that Machado was misunderstood - that he had been used as the Castro's troubleshooter, solving problems and that had given him a reputation as a hard-liner that was not really accurate. I'll try to locate that article.

"There aren't too many people in Cuba who can be outshined by Raul Castro. Machado Ventura might be one of them," said Daniel Erikson, vice president at the Inter-American Dialogue, a Washington think tank specializing in Latin America.
"One of Fidel Castro's secrets to political success was having a loyal No. 2 who he could easily overshadow, that being Raul Castro," he added. "I feel like Raul Castro might be taking a page from Fidel's playbook in picking a No. 2 who has his back."
