from [1]. This checks out, as far as I know, but the source doesn't qualify as reliable. William and George are mentioned in the article. George is [2] on WikiTree, but the link to his father gives a sparse page.
Hence the reliance on Macready for context. His diary mentions "Captain Birch" and "Colonel Birch", both of whom are presumably George. The diary simply assumes Jonathan is known to the reader: the notes do not place him exactly as William's brother.
There is more information about the sons of Thomas Birch of Alford in the Rugby School Register. Jonathan presumably started his naval career young, as a midshipman, and would not have gone there.
