Claims of Stolen Valor

[edit]

A claim of stolen valor requires a reputable source correctly cited. This Ain't Hell's FOIA request revealed his military service records and concluded, "he was a Marine Reservist, and it looks like he had some time in combat as a truck driver (a tough and dangerous job in Iraq)." Tattoo/military discharge issue

[edit]

Several times, I have removed text copypasted from a site explaining the Marines' limitations on tattoos. This text was included because Ritzheimer has claimed to have been discharged from the Marines for his tattoos but he hasn't explained what, exactly, the issue was. I believe this is a problem vis-a-vis WP:SYNTH, specifically its request that we not take item A and item B to imply item C. I cannot, for the life of me, see how including text mentioning the Marines' ban on tattoos that are "sexist, racist, vulgar, anti-american, anti-social, gang related, or extremest group or organization related" isn't a SYNTH problem. This text, sourced to a page that doesn't mention Ritzheimer, implies (that's "IMPLIES," not "says" or "claims" or anything like that) that Ritzheimer was discharged for such a tattoo. That a simple GIS fetches an image of him with "USMC" tattooed on his right arm just above his wrist makes this even stranger.

I have repeatedly tried to remove this information because 1), the only source on Ritzheimer's discharge is Ritzheimer himself, 2), including any information about sexist/hateful/etc. tattoos but not clearly connecting that to Ritzheimer is an obvious SYNTH vio, and 3), we have evidence (which I admit is really circumstantial) that if Ritzheimer is telling the truth, the issue was the "USMC" on his right forearm. When I remove this information, it just gets replaced by Prostetnic Vogon Jeltz, who, rather than explain what I'm not understanding about the SYNTH policy, just linked to SYNTH is not a rigid rule, which is not a policy and which, like everything else I've been told, doesn't address my concerns at all. Problems with your claim:
  1. - you are misrepresenting the policy involved in a rather pedantic manner. The first notice in the WP:SYNTH section links to "See also: Wikipedia:What SYNTH is not". As per your own rather insulting edit summary previous, I suggest you might read it rather than complaining when people point you to it.
  2. - The site it is linked to conforms to the WP:RS, WP:V policies.
  3. - I'm fine with Parsley Man's suggested compromise, which moves the information and link to the reliable source page out of the main article space and into the notes at the bottom.
I think that about covers it. Prostetnic Vogon Jeltz (talk) 02:57, 15 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
