Sale price - Pounds or Dollars?
[edit]"The Oxford Companion to the Theatre" - my source for this particular bit of information - quotes the 1798 sale price of the theatre as "£115" (ie - 115 Great British Pounds). The Dollar article on Wikipedia suggests the USA adopted the Dollar as its unit of currency in 1792, six years earlier. Sadly the 'Oxford Companion' doesn't cite its references for this info, so I cannot check that the amount is definitely correctly quoted in pounds rather than dollars. As this is an article about an American building I feel the price ought to be quoted in the local, American, currency, if appropriate. Can anyone either (a) confirm or contradict from acceptable sources that the theatre was sold at a 'pounds' rather than 'dollars' price, or (b) come up with the equivalent dollar value for £115 in early 1798? - Dollars were not universally used in the early days of the republic. A 1794 broadside from this theater advertises prices as "Box 8S. Pit 6S. Gallery 4S." So it's possible a sale price in pounds is correct, although additional sources might be helpful to confirm. Station1 (talk) 05:24, 30 July 2018 (UTC)
