Political views
Hi all. I am new to this page. Thanks for all your work on it. Just wanted to note that I added some information to Shimkus' political views (which only had the issue of global warming -- i know he cares about other stuff too) and also added subheadings. Hope it helps! Mackabean (talk) 06:15, 14 December 2010 (UTC)

Does this material really belong in the heading of his biography? I think while this may warrant a mention, it should not be displayed as prominently in the bio as it is presently.
Sources for GLSEN support and comments made about the Iraq War
I have provided citations for both of these statements, though I recognize they are soft sources. If another editor can find better sources for them, please replace them, and if I happen to find one, I will do the same. It is somewhat difficult to find sources on GLSEN's support for Shimkus since those events happened over three years ago and were somewhat minor in the political spectrum. If the information about the GLSEN is inappropriate for this article, and another editor removes it again, I will not attempt to reinsert it. Likewise, if the edits I made to the section about the Iraq War are inappropriate, I will not revert any changes made to them either. Thank you. Cumulus Clouds 00:10, 28 October 2007 (UTC)
In my opinion, the GLSEN thing is not only not important enough to earn its own section, but it is misleading. I say that because upon reading it I, myself, was misled to think that Shimkus was a supporter of LGBTQ rights. After doing some research of my own, I found that that is not the case. To have a section that says nothing more than the fact that he was "praised" by GLSEN does not seem to be an accurate representation of this issue. I will, therefore, go ahead and remove them as you suggested. If someone in the future feels that this article needs a section, or at least a mention, of Sen. Shimkus's stance on LGBTQ issues, here is a link that I found to be very informative: http://www.ontheissues.org/IL/John_Shimkus_Civil_Rights.htm Denis Diderot II (talk) 05:20, 17 April 2009 (UTC)
Global Warming comments
I can see that there have been numerous revisions to the "Controversies" segment of this article regarding the comments made by the subject on Global warming. It has been put forth that including these comments under the heading of "Controversies" is in violation of the Neutral Point of View guideline. I do not wish to pass judgment on the merits of the comments in question, but I do consider them relevant to the article. I would like to begin a dialogue on whether or not to include these comments and if they are to be included how best to add them while keeping to WP:NPOV. Ksjohnso (talk) 05:44, 19 November 2010 (UTC)
- I removed Shimkus' comments on global warming primarily because an editor had moved the content into the "Controversy" section, even though there is no indication that the congressman's comment on global warming were controversial. I'll go ahead and restore the comments under a more appropriate subheading, especially now that the comments are getting a lot more play in conjunction with Shimkus' position on the House Energy Committee. Uncle Dick (talk) 05:54, 19 November 2010 (UTC)
- The comments about AGW have received so much notice precisely because they are controversial. They are explicitly described as "controversial" in current news stories [1]. It's hard to find an article about his current bid for House Energy Committee that doesn't mention them, usually as way of introducing Shimkus. It's clear that's one of the primary ways of identifying him, as "That Guy who made those comments". Glaucus (talk) 04:36, 23 November 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks for the article. I still think that the congressman's comments fit better in a "Political Views" section in relation to his stance on emissions trading legislation. Certainly that is the context in which he intended his remarks to be taken. I suspect that the controversy is more closely related to partisan sniping over Shimkus' strong conservative political views on global warming and climate change legislation rather than his biblical exegesis. Uncle Dick (talk) 04:49, 23 November 2010 (UTC)
- Isn't all of that true for most every "controversy" a politician is involved in? With the exception of the Mark Foley Scandal, that describes the other controversies here. You may ascribe it to partisan sniping, but it is clearly considered a controversy in the news coverage. Subsequent interviews have suggested that he doesn't actually consider those comments to be representative of his political views (see [2]). So it seems it would better fit in Controversies than in Political Views. Glaucus (talk) 15:39, 23 November 2010 (UTC)
The above don't appear to relate to the current structure and the existing climate change section is missing this well known content. Restoring with refs. 72.228.177.92 (talk) 20:08, 12 March 2011 (UTC)
- OK, I'm not, decided I don't give a shit. If somebody does, google "God promised Noah" and "climate". Appears it will be in the congressional record as it was apparently said during a comittee session. 72.228.177.92 (talk) 20:14, 12 March 2011 (UTC)

Editing by firm hired by Shimkus (FP1 Strategies)
Hey everybody,
Just a heads-up that this article was most likely edited by FP1 Strategies, a group hired by Shimkus to manage his digital media presence. (evidence). Would anyone complain if I undid their changes just on principle? I hope not, because that's what I'm about to do. Thanks, Ellen -- EllenMcGill (talk) 15:35, 9 April 2016 (UTC)
- I've undone the changes. Anybody wants to undo them again, I won't complain--it just doesn't seem right to let Shimkus write his own Wikipedia biography. Thanks, Ellen -- EllenMcGill (talk) 17:53, 9 April 2016 (UTC)
