Death
MSNBC is reporting he was fatally shot at the 2011 Tucson shooting. Is there confirmation? I don't see any news sources online yet. --Muboshgu (talk) 20:40, 8 January 2011 (UTC)
- There was just a similar report/comment on the BBC but it isn't really confirmed as yet, but it doesn't look good, suggest taking our time with this and waiting for an official announcement. Off2riorob (talk) 20:47, 8 January 2011 (UTC)
- - It might be a good idea to suggest possible semi protection at a future point if it gets busy. Off2riorob (talk) 20:50, 8 January 2011 (UTC)
- Short blurb at Huffington post. I think we should proceed with caution as the media seems quite confused today - it must be chaotic there.--Jimbo Wales (talk) 20:52, 8 January 2011 (UTC)
Fox News is now reporting that Roll may not be dead. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 206.228.97.2 (talk) 20:57, 8 January 2011 (UTC)
- CNN is running a headline quoting President Obama that Roll is dead.--Jimbo Wales (talk) 22:09, 8 January 2011 (UTC)
- It can be added, then, with the source. It still must comply with BLP and be sourced. That's all. --Kleopatra (talk) 22:17, 8 January 2011 (UTC)
- I also heard from Obama that Roll is dead (as piped through live from the White House by CNN). — Rickyrab | Talk 22:30, 8 January 2011 (UTC)
- I added a source. The problem was the source used did not link directly to the Obama press conference, that rolled up, if you stayed on the page, after the first press conference which did not mention Roll at all. We have to source information correctly in BLPs. --Kleopatra (talk) 22:35, 8 January 2011 (UTC)

Why was he there?
Do we have any information on why a sitting federal judge was participating in what was, essentially, a political event? I think it would give background to the story.John Paul Parks (talk) 01:55, 9 January 2011 (UTC)
- I read somewhere, and now I cannot find it, that he was not actually participating in the event, that he was an innocent bystander who was out and about in Tucson, happened upon the event and was just hanging around when the shooting started. But, as I say, I can't find the source for that. – ukexpat (talk) 02:42, 9 January 2011 (UTC)
- On MSNBC, they reported that he lived near the supermarket and so decided to walk over there and shake Giffords' hand, basically. --Muboshgu (talk) 02:45, 9 January 2011 (UTC)
Statement of Chief Justice Roberts
While most of the statements reported so far have been directed to the Congresswoman, Chief Justice John Roberts issued the following:
- "The violence in Arizona today has senselessly taken five lives and inflicted tragic loss on dedicated public servants and their families. We in the judiciary have suffered the terrible loss of one of our own. Chief Judge John Roll was a wise jurist who selflessly served Arizona and the nation with great distinction, as attorney and judge, for more than 35 years. I express my deepest condolences to his wife Maureen and his children, as well as the other victims and their families. Chief Judge Roll's death is a somber reminder of the importance of the rule of law and the sacrifices of those who work to secure it."
Statement from Chief Justice Roberts on Death of Judge Roll. I feel that we should include most or all of it in the article, as a reaction statement. Cheers! bd2412 T 03:03, 9 January 2011 (UTC)
- I agree (assuming sourcing is reliable). Trebor (talk) 03:08, 9 January 2011 (UTC)
- The same quote, or portions of it, is being reported on pretty much all of the major news outlets. I'll go ahead and add it. bd2412 T 03:39, 9 January 2011 (UTC)
