Single that does not exist

[edit]

This article says:

"Other singles were "The World Belongs to Yesterday" (1972), written by Vanda & Young"

Unfortunately there is no evidence that this single exists. An exhaustive search for it online turns up nothing. If it does actually exist it should be on the "Early Singles" page of the "official" discography on John Miles own web site here:

http://www.john-miles.net/

Here are two more discographies where the single "The World Belongs to Yesterday" is conspicuous by its absence. Some of the editors here don't like to recognize web sites such as this despite the fact that they have reliable information. These sites show pictures and other documentation which prove that the records DO EXIST. Are we supposed to believe that collectors are buying and selling fake records on these sites? Here are two other sites with reliable discographies for John Miles that do not contain evidence for the existence of this single.

https://www.discogs.com/artist/217272-John-Miles

https://www.45cat.com/artist/john-miles

The only reliable evidence of a recording called "The World Belongs to Yesterday" by John Miles comes from a 2 CD set of songs written by Vanda and Young which was released only in Australia in 1992. Reliable information about the CD is here:

https://www.discogs.com/release/2634706-Various-Their-Music-Goes-Round-Our-Heads

The recording does exist but the single does not. You can listen to song the taken from the 1992 CD here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2n65il0gCiI

In light of no evidence for the single I have added a "citation needed" note to the article. The note needs to remain until someone can provide proof of existence. Proof would include a picture of the record, or a verifiable evidence of a sale. If no one is able to provide evidence to support existence of this single the information will need to be removed.

Recording unreleased tracks is not notable. Every musician does that every day. Not notable information does not belong in the article. Removing not notable information.

Does anyone know more than I do about the incident where John was interviewed by the police seeking the Yorkshire Ripper because of coincidences involving his tour schedule and his accent resembling that on the tape sent to them? Apparently the track "Nice Man Jack" from the Zaragon album was inspired by this. Britmax 11:31, 24 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

No clue, but I think the police should interview him again. Surely being responsible for "Music" is a criminal offence? -- DeLarge 10:28, 31 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Apparently "Nice Man Jack" was one of the reasons they spoke to him and "It's Not Called Angel" from the More Miles Per Hour album was a response. Britmax (talk) 09:02, 11 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Real Name

[edit]

This was removed from the main article (although it is perhaps worth exploring further) - "John Miles" is not the real name of this artist. In the book "The Thrill of It All, The Story of Bryan Ferry and Roxy Music" author David Buckley talks about the early career of drummer Paul Thompson who was with "John Miles" in a group called The Influence. Buckley describes this performer as "the artist who would later become known as John Miles." His official website says the birth name was "John Errington."

Shared music with Andrea Boccelli

[edit]

Italic textBeing a long term fan of AB and enjoying his shared track with John Miles in the album Romanza I am puzzled that there is no mention of this collaboration in the articles on John Miles. Please consider adding this. Was it a "one- off"? Were there related problems? Davjo — Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.31.32.74 (talk) 05:22, 19 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I am not an editor but noticed that at the bottom of the article the link to John Miles Jr goes to the Belgian band Milk Inc. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.164.126.176 (talk) 12:11, 6 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Did you read the article on Milk Inc? John Miles Jr. does not have his own article so the link goes to the article for this band, of which he has been an occasional member. Britmax (talk) 12:44, 6 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

John Miles first solo single

The following discussion has been closed. Please do not modify it.

Hello I just saw my editing was cancelled and reverted, maybe I did some mistake in editing, still the periods: "Following this, he formed The John Miles Set, with Bob Marshall and Dave Symonds before starting his solo career in 1971. His first single recorded as a solo artist was "Come Away Melinda" in 1972" are not entirely correct as his first solo single came out in September 1970, as you can check here: https://www.45cat.com/record/oas508 or here: https://www.45cat.com/record/oas508 and here https://www.discogs.com/master/329336-John-Miles-Why-Dont-You-Love-Me". "Come Away Melinda" was not his firt single but just his third, I'll try to add his missing Singles on the Discography page. Thanks Northern lights (talk) 18:28, 30 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

The reference given from Billboard does not say "Come Away Melinda" is John's first solo single. It says that "Come Away Melinda" is the first record on the Orange Records label to be distributed by Pye Records. Someone did not read or did not understand the Billboard article. Northern Lights is correct that this was not Miles' first solo single. False claims such as this in the article need to be removed. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.212.137.171 (talk) 21:53, 5 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
This is the only properly referenced article to his first solo single that meets Wikipedia rules. The one previously removed is a website that it is filled in by public, which does not show where the date 1969 comes from, and the actual picture of the record does not have a date. Davidstewartharvey (talk) 07:30, 6 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I have looked online at other references for "I want to live", and found this blog https://www.bestmusic80.com/post/the-right-to-sing which says the song was released by The Influence, which Miles was in. Which is also recorded on 45cat https://www.45cat.com/record/oas201. As I said these are not reliable sources as per Wikipedia, and there attach already shows conflict. Davidstewartharvey (talk) 08:29, 6 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Attn: "Davidstewartharvey" You can't win an argument by hiding the truth or making straw man arguments. This is a form of vandalism. You and your "editors" got it wrong. The claim you are making is blatantly FALSE. The reference cited does NOT support the information given in the article. Wikipedia policy is explicitly against reporting verifiably false information, such as the information you have deleted multiple times.
For the benefit of you or anyone else who is unable or unwilling to read the Billboard article here is an EXACT copy of what it says:
...Pye has acquired the Orange label under a distribution deal for the U.K. and the world outside Germany. Orange, the label offshoot of the Orange recording studios, will release John Miles' "Come Away MeLinda" as its first record through Pye...
The article states that "Come Away Melinda" is the first Orange Record release to be distributed by Pye. It does NOT say that "Come Away Melinda" is the first John Miles single. The subject of this paragraph is not John Miles. It is the distribution agreement between two record labels. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.212.137.171 (talk) 01:54, 8 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The record "Come Away Melinda" was on Orange Records, distributed by Pye Records. Previous Orange Records releases (which included John Miles' earlier records) were on Orange but not distributed by Pye. This is what the article says. Please stop making false claims and backing them up with references that do not support the claim. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.212.137.171 (talk) 02:08, 18 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

you still don't get it. You do not delete reliable referenced material from articles as that is vandalism. Davidstewartharvey (talk) 07:22, 18 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Davidstewartharvey: You are the one who disagrees with the reference. The reference does not use the words "through" or "under" when describing the distribution relationship between the two record companies. It does not say what you are trying to claim it says. It's not a matter of what wording I like or don't like. YOU ADDED WORDS THAT ARE NOT IN THE REFERENCE. YOU CHANGED WHAT THE MEANING OF WHAT THE REFERENCE SAYS!!!!

Since you still don't get it. I am changing the article to quote directly from the source. That way if you change it you are changing the what the reference says and everyone who reads the article will know.

And, by the way, you still do not understand the difference between a singular and a plural. One show, is singular. Two shows is plural. In the English language different verbs are used to distinguish between one thing and two or more things. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.212.137.171 (talk) 08:11, 18 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Deleting FALSE information is not vandalism. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.212.137.171 (talk) 08:30, 18 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Issue resolved. It does not matter whether we agree with the wording that Davidstewartharver used in the article. The wording that Davidstewartharvey used does not agree with the wording in the original reference because Davidstewartharvey changed the meaning. The exact quote has been in the article now for a week. Since he has not tried to change the article again, we will now assume he is capable of understanding that an exact quote from the source is an accurate representation of the meaning and the multiple versions he wrote were WRONG. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.212.137.171 (talk) 17:20, 25 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. I have just seen the above comments in this talk page. 71.212.137.171 please can you refrain from the aggressive language. Davidstewartharvey had deleted what was an inaccurate entry based upon a non reliable reference, plus rolled back changes that had removed formatting (block quote) which are used to make it easier for readers to process the article. In fact in your edits you had in fact deleted one of the Billboard's writers quotes. You also reverted the reversal of Materialscientist, a highly respected and experienced editor with over a million edits, over a length of a sentence which does not break MOS. The so called error that you pointed out regarding the single Come Away Melinda was correct in the wording originally used, and had not been picked up by experienced editors as part of it being awarded In the news status. However Davidstewartharvey last edit was actually factually correct.
He had not stated that this was John Miles first record, but the first record released by Orange distributed by Pye, which is not inaccurate at all ("His first single released as a solo artist through Orange under Pye Records" - it was the first record released by Orange through Pye).147.147.52.164 (talk) 00:55, 27 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
