Commencement of Heavey as bishop of Cairns
[edit]The article says 1941, but this December 1940 newspapers article suggests he was already Bishop at that time. Kerry (talk) 01:12, 7 May 2017 (UTC)
- I don't know very much about Catholic hierarchy, but I noticed that while he was referred to as Bishop in that article, it wasn't "of Cairns" - so I did a bit of searching. This suggests that the Bishop title (at that time) came from being "Vicar Apostolic of the Vicarlate Apostolic of Cooktown", which I'm presuming is not the same as Bishop of Cairns. This says he was consecrated as a Bishop in 1914 (!). This explains the basis for him having the Bishop title in his circumstances. And this and this support the 1941 date for the elevation. - Smacks head! I should have remembered. The Vicariate Apostolic of Cooktown was the precursor to Diocese of Cairns (when the area was upgraded to a diocese, Cairns had overtaken Cooktown as the major town). So Heavey was the last vicar apostolic who seamlessly transitioned into first bishop. Thanks. Kerry (talk) 01:47, 8 May 2017 (UTC)
