South Sea Company

[edit]

Is it correct to describe him / the BoE as "closely involved in the financing of the South Sea Company"?

AIUI, his involvement in financing the company was relatively unimportant (it was already pulling in money from everywhere and didn't need it) – although sizable (>£200,000 in his name, albeit the Bank's money) this was not a major proportion of the total. Where Hanger's involvement really became important was when the Bubble burst, and Hanger had to find a way to use the resources of the Bank in order to limit the ramifications of the collapse across Britain generally. It would thus be better to phrase this (and expand it generally) as, "involved in recovery after the collapse of the SSC", or somesuch. Andy Dingley (talk) 14:12, 3 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
